is stevia actually safe?
i was in the health supplement store picking out a protein shake powder and wanted to get the kind sweetened with stevia.

the guy who works there told me stevia wasn't all it was cracked up to be, and so now i google stevia and find out it can be bad.

is this true?

guess i'm gonna have to get plain protein powder with no flavor at all. yuck.

Hmmm, haven't heard of any side-effects (unlike all other sweeteners). I spoke to a Doctor, and he recommended it.

I actually heard of a health benefit. That it dilates the blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and enhancing circulation.

I tried to like it, but it has a weird aftertaste to me. I like to make lemonade with lemon juice and a non-sugar sweetener and I like Sweet N Low the best...I know I know, but it tastes the best to me. Stevia in that concoction tasted bad and gave me dry mouth. And it was horrible in coffee. Sweet n Low beat it there too...for me.

Re: is stevia actually safe?
was just reading about how it was deemed 'unsafe' and caused birth defects or something like that. then the big companies got a hold of it and now it's 'safe' if it's been processed. saw through the bullshit right there and now think it's best consumed in it's most natural form. so will be checking very carefully at the brands that make the powder with stevia (are they manufactured by pharmaceuticals or small companies.. cuz i don't trust the big ones even if the stuff is cheaper.

the stuff i bought years ago tasted like black licorice which was kinda gross so i've always stayed away from it. maybe it's natural flavor has that aftertaste, once it's processed it's more palatable.

I reasearched it and found this,Making YOU the Dumb Fuck!!

Stevioside “seems to affect the male reproductive organ system,” European scientists concluded last year.

In the laboratory, steviol can be converted into a mutagenic compound, which may promote cancer by causing mutations in the cells’ genetic material (DNA).

Very large amounts of stevioside can interfere with the absorption of carbohydrates in animals and disrupt the conversion of food into energy within cells. “This may be of particular concern for children

Stevia is just a plant. Some people take it for it's health benefits, some use it as a sugar alternative.

I personally like sugar. It's only 15 calories a teaspoon. Just don't eat a cup of it a day and you'll be fine.

Re: is stevia actually safe?
anything that has to be processed before we eat it can be deemed "unsafe"...we dont really know what they do to our food.

There was an ad on my facebook page for a product that was better than Stevia and it was unprocessed , I wrote to them (on FB) and told them that that was a lot of crap, if it was not processed , then how the hell does it get in the powdery form.

If they lie about that, then they will tell you anything.

They got a bit cranky with me...wankers, I wish I could find the product again

Stevia is completely SAFE to use. Its the only no calorie sweetener that is safe to use. This is provided to me, a Stevia user by Arch Angel Raphael, the "healing angel". Do NOT use it mixed with sugar alcohols where are dangerous.

Re: is stevia actually safe?
Stevia's healthful and you want one that has a really high Rebaudioside A count. I have some and it's not got that bitter/cold sort of aftertaste like lots of the artificial sweeteners do. NuNaturals makes one kind of stevia that's really concentrated like this. There are probably one or two other manufacturers who do too now. I use the stuff where it's 1/64th a teaspoon equal to 1 teaspoon of sugar. I don't know if all the stevia products they put out have this high rebaudioside A content though, I think they do not. Something about trimming the leaves of more bitter parts before they grind them up maybe.

Re: is stevia actually safe?
I think stevia is safe, I had a hard time finding it years ago, I used barleymalt sweetener. I liked it, it was a little sweeter than suger so I just used less. It doesn't work in coffee at all. Otherwise I used it in place of sugar for everything. It doesn't cause cancer in any amount.
