I am really in a quandary..Why no Aftershocks..

I thought someone said there was a 5.0..also do you have to have aftershocks?

Massive Quake hits Costa Rica and generates a lot of damage - tourists are leaving hotels in Paquera


Update 17:03 UTC :
- Supercompro Supermarkets in Nicoya, Heredia, Alajuela and Jaco, and the Orotina Hypermarket remain closed, as between 60% and 80% of the products fell from shelves. In some cases there were some fallen shelves but other than that, major structural damage was averted.

Update :
- Reports of the Guanacaste province are mentioning cracked streets, landslides and areas without electricity after a flight over the area.
- The gangpath that provides ferry service between Puntarenas and Paquera has some damage. There are cracks in the road about five feet before the ramp that leads to the boat, in Paquera and in addition some rockfalls.
- Meanwhile, some tourists began to leave the Pacific hotels staying at the hotel Barceló Tambor in Paquera. There are reports that some rooms were damaged. There are cracked walls and broken glass.
- There is very little damage on the roads around Costa Rica. A metal bridge however collapsed over the Sucio river in Sarapiquí.

Tsunamis usually are the result of underwater earthquakes. I don't know why they issue warnings when it hits on land.

I still hear some of them.

The last 2 weeks I have had a problem with worms, they seek the inside of the house. These are not regular earth worms though, they are long and very thin.

I think they are deep earth worms, never seen these types before.

I have spent other rainy seasons here and never seen them before.

Anyone else here in costa rica who have seen these worms in their houses the last couple of weeks? And have you ever seen them before? By the way I have had no new squirmy intruders in the last day.


I have seen them in Costa Rica in the jungle during the rainy season. They love bathrooms. They die when not exposed to moisture.

Some earlier reports had it offshore as much as 50+ miles.

There is no time frame. There often is nothing before a big quake. It often takes awhile for aftershocks. The whole "there hasn't been any aftershocks for 2 hours so it must be a foreshock' thing is just people surfing a doom wave as long as they can ride it.

The only time you don't see aftershocks is for quakes that are hundreds of miles deep.

This quake was only around 20 miles deep so there definitely should be aftershocks, if their aren't any a fw hours from now than I would be extremely concerned.

but glad you at least don't deny that the warning I posted mentioned the 5th DAY OF SEPTEMBER and ALA JUELA (COSTA RICA) for a MAJOR QUAKE 7+ to 8+
