Then, the mirror began forming around him, then the mirror inverted itself (through his mouth)? That is the first time in the movie he began understanding both sides of reality. From then on, he lived in both realities, the inner, and the outer. His goal was to know himself inside out and outside in. BUT, the only way to accomplish the end goal, was to be reborn.
