Food Combining Made Easy by Herbert Shelton a progenitor from the Natural Hygienist Movement
I recommend this book. This water will benefit all. Drink it in and apply it. Don't knock it till you try it.

The truth is right here and its been here all along.

I wrote this book review and wish to share it with Godlike right here.

Food Combining Made Easy by Herbert Shelton, A Book Review

What Happened to Eden?

Imagine a world filled with free food, perfect health and good natured, law abiding citizens. No laws are needed because the human inhabitants of this world lack the scourge of inappropriate desire. Lacking inappropriate desire, people exhibit unselfish, indiscriminate virtue. Such a world, dubbed the Garden of Eden exists in the book of Genesis of The Holy Bible. Interestingly, accounts of this world also exist in The Analects given by Confucius as well as ancient Daoist traditions. All three of these, essentially historical or even simply ideological accounts arrive at the same conclusion. At some point during the course of the existence of Eden, something happens and humankind starts to inherit a world filled with greed, selfish desire, and man-made laws that cannot, it seems, remain unbroken.

In modern times, a little known movement, dubbed the Natural Hygiene Movement, proposes that the ideals of an Eden like existence have not completely fallen away from humanity. Rather, through proper and disciplined choices, based on the scientific research undertaken by medical doctors, all of humanity contains the ingredients necessary to regress back to an Eden-like existence.

In his classic book, Food Combining Made Easy, Herbert M. Shelton takes up a mere sixty-three pages of a reader’s time to expound on the essential dietary choices which contain the power to awaken Eden in all of humanity.

First published in 1940, Food Combining Made Easy remains available to today’s reader. Mainly a practical guide to eating, this volume does touch on the need to balance emotional and physical aspects of a person. For a person capable of following a few simple rules, however, this little book provides strict guidelines that go beyond simply eating those vegetables that a lot of mothers and doctors have given up attempting to facilitate. Compared to modern societal staples of fast food, junk (processed) food and more food – this little book seems stricter than ten pairs of helicopter parents put together.

The most fundamental aspect of these rules is that they are based on digestion. Medical Doctors in the 1800’s conducted, live, practical research on digestion. The rules then are a product of their findings along with Shelton’s own experiences and those of the people he treated. It is worth mentioning that in his lifetime, Shelton was jailed several times during his life for practicing medicine without a license. In 1921 he graduated from the American School of Naturopathy with a Doctor of Naturopathy (ND) and a Doctor of Naturopathic Literature (ND Lit). He published over forty books and ran several sanitariums across the country. Still, he was plagued with legal battles as the establishment was and still is critical of
his views.

The rules that are put forth in Food Combining Made Easy are simple, but they do fly in the face of what is considered American cuisine today. There are many stakeholders present that would contest any truth that these rules may or may not contain. These stakeholders can be summarized within the groups of for profit industries as well as the individual desires of appetite. Basically everyone is a stakeholder in the current notions of how one should eat and remains one of the most difficult notions to deconstruct, both personally and collectively. Based on my own self knowledge and personal experiments, I posit that this has been the case since the beginnings of civilization. In relation to the Garden of Eden, my idea is essentially that the Fruit from the Tree of Knowledge actually represents the beginning of processing foodstuffs and combining them in unnatural ways in human history. Perhaps there never was a time when all people on this planet ate natural diets. Nonetheless, one thing I do know for certain through my own experience is that the practical implementation of the natural diet put forth by Shelton in Food Combining Made Easy, practiced over time (two or more days) brought an Eden-like existence directly into my personal viewfinder.

Following are the basic rules, organized in the three-meals-a-day schema of daily sustenance that most world citizens desire to enjoy today. These are purposely abridged; something that is a keystone to harnessing the potential of this information is to take that personal step forward and discover for yourself how this information can be used and what further information you might need to further your own understanding. For starters though, you might try these rules for a day as a personal gauge. After all, what is one day without a sandwich and all of its manifestations that tend to be the very definition of American Cuisine (i.e. burgers, pizza, burritos, chow mien, spaghetti etc.).

Breakfast – Eat fruit. Fresh fruit is a natural combination of vitamins, nutrients and simple sugars that will provide a quick and lasting boost of energy nicely regarded at the beginning of the day. Watch out for fruitful combinations that put acids and bases together. For Instance, Apples and oranges do not combine as well as oranges and strawberries. For evidence of this, try combining baking soda and orange juice in a container without entertaining a naturally energetic reaction.

Lunch – Eat starchy vegetables such as squash, potatoes and/or whole grains with vegetable salad. The complex carbohydrates in these types of vegetables will sustain your energy levels for the rest of the day while naturally providing vitamins and minerals. Leafy greens are the backbone of a vegetable salad but other examples exist as well. Watch out for processed carbohydrates as most of the nutrients have been leached from the flours during the processing. Attempts to add vitamins and nutrients to processed food would not need to occur if the food was not processed. In essence, keep it natural.

Dinner – Choose a single protein source and eat this with vegetable salad. Meaty proteins are all flesh, so there is not a problem combining different meats. However, cheese is a separate type of protein from meat and do not combine well. Similarly, natural proteins are found in a variety of foods that are grown that should be kept to a single source of protein (i.e. nuts, chickpeas etc.). Proteins at the end of the day help facilitate the natural healing process as these materials are largely what the body uses to repair itself. Separated from the starches, the body is able to utilize the individual nutrients most efficiently and effectively.

Water – Do not drink water with a meal. This washes away the digestive enzymes needed to properly digest the food. Drink water at least ten minutes before a meal and after enough time has passed for the meal to be digested.

Cheating – When cross-combining does occur, Shelton recommends skipping a meal to allow the body time to digest the food properly.

In his landmark book, Food Combining Made Easy, Shelton provides a definition of eating that largely escapes civilized minds today. Are his rules a road map to Eden? Was there ever an Eden or a Golden Age like those described in the literatures that survive from the past into the present? Can we as individuals transform ourselves, thereby providing a guiding light for the rest of humanity by the disciplined application of this definition of eating? Doesn’t it make sense that at the root of any type of change we desire to make for ourselves, in our lives, lays the very stuff that we put into our bodies? The historical question may never be answered but the others, by my own personal assessment are rhetorical.

OP, thanks for the data. I decided to go on a water fast and studied Shelton's advices and also Dr. Robert Morse, ND (over 800 Youtube videos).

When on a water (or juice) fast the body heals many things on its own. Dr. Robert Morse really hammers home the data in his videos. His emphasis is on the lymphatic system and juice fasting.

From what I read a lengthy water fast is ended when one is left with no more body fat. Then one breaks the fast with diluted watermelon juice.

Interesting. Fasting is a big part of Shelton's stuff. One ought to be careful though. Shelton lost almost everything because a person at one of his sanitariums died from fasting too much.

From my experience, a water fast for a day or so is a good way to start proper combining. Once proper combinations are taken in and the body starts to repair itself you get incredibly energized. The interesting part, at least for me is that I don't need big portions. My hunger is satisfied with very little until I lose most of my body fat.

good thread...I just did a colon cleanse recently and was amazed at what came out of me.

Been thinking of water fasting since I completed the cleanse.

Re: Food Combining Made Easy by Herbert Shelton a progenitor from the Natural Hygienist Movement
OP, one problem with your representation here of Natural Hygiene but it's an important one: 'whole grains' are not a part of the Natural Hygiene diet! grains are 'for the birds' literally. If and when they are used at all, it is only the green sprouts that are used. Food is eaten in its raw state only, as a rule, just as nature made it. If you cannot eat it that way, you were probably not meant to eat it at all.

I know it's only a little phrase, 'whole grains' but people who don't want to give up doping themselves with grain will try to sneak it into a discussion on healthy diet.
I recommend Frederic Patenaude as a still living source for further information:
[link to www.fredericpatenaude.com]

Another thing: burritos, hamburgers, pizza and...chow mein are neither 'cuisine' nor American. They are snacks meant, even originally, to be eaten on the street, not at home. We have strong regional identities with American food and I have personally read recipe books written in many languages other than English teaching people to copy some of them. I'm getting a little tired of seeing 'America' getting slammed by ignorant and marginally-literate writers who likely couldn't cook a decent meal if their lives depended upon it.

Natural Hygiene speaks for itself, and I happen to be an adherent, but I've never needed to see my nation's culture and people disparaged to feel encouraged to it and neither should you.

I have to be honest. I don't really like your tone. If I disparaged "American" cuisine in the manner you suggest, I did not do it because I am "marginally literate" or ignorant. I believe that most food that is available in America today be it Italian, Mexican, Chinese or Mc Donald's has been Americanized. What I mean by this is that it is all starches and carbs mixed with proteins and is heavily processed. According to Herbert Shelton's book on food combining this is the tantamount "bad" combination and it is everywhere here in America.

If you want to argue semantics on the definition of "American Food" that's fine but I think it misses the point especially when discussing the last 40 years of food in America.

As far as grain you are correct. Shelton says to try and avoid grain but if you do have grain than at least eat a whole grain.

I actually need to do a little more research in this area as whole grains, even rice, quinua and beans are sort of like superfoods as they contain carbs and proteins. Shelton does not expound heavily on this subject in the book that I reviewed.

Remember, this is a book review I wrote. It is not necessarily representative of the entire Natural Hygiene Movement but I would not even know they existed if it were not for Herbert Shelton and this book Food Combining Made Easy. Also, I am attempting to connect with people who are familiar with popular culture and not so much with Natural Hygiene.

I am glad to hear from you and I will look into the information you have provided. Many people are completely unaware and need to discover what American food companies are trying to do to them. The only way they will do that is if they actually try to eat differently.

I am open to suggestions on how to wake people up. For me this is the most important thing that I have learned in my life and it is one of the most difficult things to share, I think because food is something that we all take ownership over in our own way and in general people don't like it when other people try to tell them about the food they feel they already know. hf

Re: Food Combining Made Easy by Herbert Shelton a progenitor from the Natural Hygienist Movement
OP, the vast majority of the 'great dishes of the world' are mis-combinations. They are therefore, dishes for holidays, special occasions, and just as you'd expect, take a while to work through the system. They were never meant to be a lifestyle, which might explain why so many of the wealthiest families in Europe were troubled by degenerative diseases. It's a pity, but there it is. People needn't 'give up' the foods to which they are emotionally attached; they only need to plan for them and then, enjoy them without reservation!

The principles are simple enough and one can apply them whether or not on a Natural Hygiene raw diet:
Number one is the problematic combo of proteins with starch - and don't we all love them too! The classic meat and potatoes, meat or fish with rice, cheese with pasta, catfish and hush-puppies, osso buco with risotto, chelo kebab on a mound of steamed rice with a raw egg yolk on it. The 'problem' is that an animal protein takes a human 12 to 21 hours to break down and use - that includes even a spoonful of milk in the coffee you drank - and in the meantime, all those carbs have to sit there and wait.

Try this experiment: stir up a mix of everything you're eating in a meal of this popular combo, leave it in a pan overnight at 'blood temperature,' tightly covered - everything you ate and drank with that meal, now. Lift the lid in the morning and have an unpleasant surprise indeed. That's what's going on in the stomach: fermentation and all the toxic gases it generates.

Fats are very nice but they can take a while to use too; that's one of their virtues for keeping hunger and cold at bay for extended periods. If you don't want gas, don't eat fresh fruit with nuts. Fats help sulfur foods digest easier, like the alliums and cruciforous, that give so many people digestive upsets when eaten raw. Most people add these instinctively, like a dollop of oil on chopped onions or a butter sauce on broccoli.

Mountain men in this country used to carry bear-fat and sugar with them as a survival food and for all the modern fears about 'evil saturated fats,' those mountain men were right about fats, especially during winter, in hard often barren country, when other ways to get it weren't available. Vegetarian humans ought to be storing nuts for winter just like squirrels do and for the same reason - but they are healthiest and quickest on the job when eaten alone. That goes for seeds like sunflower, pumpkin and sesame too, which are mostly fat.

On the other hand. today's low-fat dieters wouldn't have lasted a week in a high country winter. Saturated fats, a group in which coconut oil has a place and thank heaven for that, can remain stable when heated. Not so with polyunsaturated, like vegetable and seed oils, which turn into the dreaded trans-fats when heated. It is lack of understanding about this one thing that has caused so many people on 'heart-healthy' diets to have more trouble than they ever had before. If you're out of coconut oil, grab the butter; you'll be a lot safer.

The problem with grains is, more than any other matter of digestion time, decades of hybridization and later, GMO. Grains just aren't real grains anymore, sniff sniff. This really does bother me; I started making my own breads when I was about ten years old and through almost three decades of marriage, my spouse never had to eat any bread in my house that hadn't been made with own hands - literally. I wouldn't use a 'bread machine' or even a dough hook. It's fundamental to the northern European soul and whether I still eat much of it or not, seeing it fucked with by modern industry bothers the hell out of me.

It's not sugar that's creating an epidemic of type 2 diabetes, but modern agriculture instead. Here's a link from Mark's Daily Apple. The site is more about paleo than raw food vegan, but the research on grains is well presented and not at all obscure:

OP, I dont know if you are still here. I would like some advice.

I drank milk with chocolate (lots of vitamins and minerals on it) as a generic for all purpose food my whole life. Never had any problems.

I make shakes with milk and grains (all kinds of grains) and chocolate powder and it feels like a super food for me.

Never heard about grains or milk being bad.

Can you explain to me how to combine proteins?
I heard that mixing carbos and proteins was good for slow digestion.

Thank you for this excellent information! Truly an excellent addition to this thread which I hold in high importance. The first thing that people must consider is that which we put into our bodies. It is literally the foundation of everything else.

And yes! The GMO machine and the processed everything needs to be exed out. Good for you on the bread. Do you grow your own grains then or have a trusted source?

Also a quick note on the coffee. According to Shelton caffine should be avoided and hence the coffee and tea. It is strict but it helps the body get back to its original state.

Well according to Shelton the best way is one protein at a time and not mixxed with carbs.

Its my perception that our bodies sorta get used to our habits over time and we become numb to what is really happening inside. Its up to you if you want to change it up but it can take awhile to stablize going from one eating style to another so the trick is to try and stay consistent for a few days to a week before you can understand what one way of eating is doing to you versus another.

You've done a good thing starting this thread in the first place. Perhaps we can help save some people some money too. There are some very nice 'superfoods' out there for sale and many of them are full of nutrition but alas, most of them are expensive too so there are going to be some of us worrying that we'll have to go without something we feel we need. That's where understanding how generous nature has actually been to us, regardless of where we live, can help us a lot. All the expensive minerals you can buy in a bottle can also be found in the weeds growing around where you live. Again, I want to say, God bless the youtube uploaders for the hundreds of videos I've found there about foraging for all areas of this country and many others.

As to the grains I used for bread, well, I couldn't always be picky but I did often buy them at the feed store and grind them myself as needed. That's because for most of my married years, right until my husband passed away, we lived several miles from a paved road, no modern 'conveniences' and had no refrigeration, except in winter when we got plenty naturally:) Even when we set up solar, it wasn't enough to keep a fridge running. The trouble with whole grain flours is they go rancid long before the refined white flour and most people don't have a sharp enough sense of smell to know they're in trouble if they eat them. Left in their 'seed' state, I had a lot more leeway, so long as I kept the stuff in the dark and dry - dry was no problem in the desert.

I'm going to fail Shelton's test about caffeine. If I don't use it all the time, it's only because the price has gone up and I didn't buy enough to be greedy till next month. I do consider it a medicinal with a specific purpose and am left in no doubt by a stomach sensitized by raw food if I've done too much of it. But I have to 'give up' too damn much already:) and until it bothers me, I'm going to keep my little 'kick' for when I need one.

As a widow watching my pennies, I spend most of my food budget already buying the best meats and produce I can afford for my dogs and cats, first, and I live on what's left. Coffee and tea - the latter, I usually order online to get a better quality and price - are just as much a part of my background as baking and I probably run on the stuff when I have no food for myself left in the house. I have to drive so far to shop, I don't do it that often. It's winter where I live, at close to 8,000 ft altitude so my foraging opportunities are limited. I do notice, however, that I don't seem to crave it much in summer.

But, by no means should anyone drink bad coffee and tea or any that's been sitting around too long. There's a lot of rancid coffee in stores too and any coffee-lover of experience should be able to smell it immediately. Coffee beans have gone up in price lately too but that's one thing I'll still pay for without complaint. San Francisco Herb Co. online has a decent price on that 'white tea,' a very smooth green tea that I think is just delightful. Still, I owe it to this thread to mention another couple of teas I also use every day in winter because I either have them right outside or I buy so much of it, I never run out:

Pine needles and peppermint. They didn't call it peppermint for nothing. Drink peppermint tea very strong when you're chilled to the bone and your insides will flush that chill in seconds after it hits your stomach. I have it on cold mornings first thing. It will literally save your life if you have a thermos of it in your vehicle when you get stuck in a blizzard. Pine needles are an excellent source of vitamin C and MSM and the hard-to-get-in-foods silica. They are blood purifiers and tonics. And they too, will warm and invigorate you in winter.

To the poster with the chocolate milk: the main problem with milk these days is it's pasteurized, making it indigestible and mucus-inducing and then add in a lot of drugs and growth hormones that are bound to promote some really perverted cell mutations. I'm fine with chocolate if you have a good one. It's full of nerve-stabilizing magnesium and its general availability is probably one of the reasons more women haven't murdered their husbands during cases of 'the vapors.' If you're craving chocolate a lot, get some more seaweed in your diet, dark green vegetables, some good fats and keep some blackstrap molasses around for quick relief. You need minerals and chocolate is giving you some of them.

Right on Thank you for some more excellent information. hf

I was able to read your comment the other day but I have been so busy I wanted to wait to respond. I work full time and go to school part time at the moment. I am single with two dogs and unfortunately my schedule currently sucks me into eating out a lot.

The one thing that will be good eventually is that I am planning to take a record of my return to good health by implementing the principles of food combining. I am really looking forward to it and I hope that perhaps I will be able to share my work in a way that helps others to discover food combining for themselves.

Shelton's deal on the coffee is mostkt about the caffeine acting as a diuretic and not allowing the body to utilize and retain enough water. When I food combine I like to cut out all fluids except for water (10 min. before a meal - not during or right after). I am even going further and distilling my own water into glass because I think that distilled water in plastic is a perfect way to imbibe loose radicals in the plastic.

when I am not food combining I do love coffee. The city I live in actually has a great coffee producer: Solar Roast. They roast coffee beans with one of four solar roasters that they have built so far. The beans they use are of good quality and I have found that their coffee is pretty good.

Pine needles and peppermint... that sounds pretty good. A friend of mine forages for a tea in the mountains nearby that he takes to cure maladies. Around where I live there is some good stuff that can be foraged. There is a wild spinach that I like to let grow and go to seed and then the prickly pear cactus is also very good and plentiful here. My dream is to build a green house that is partially underground someday also.

The interesting thing about food combining is that I find that I save a lot of money. When I eat out I spend 20-30 dollars a day sometimes but when I eat in and food combine and limit or completely reduce my waste, I not only eat much healthier but I can eat well for about 30-50 dollars a week especially if I already have a stock of some dry goods and some meat in the freezer. Than all I need is the fresh stuff that I want for the week. And for that I get to feel much better too.

Have a good one! hf
