Cyclone Approaching Australia-160mph-Cat 3, Possible Upgrade To A Cat 4
This is the Cyclone season for them:

Cyclone Clare threatens west

THE first tropical cyclone of the season is expected to make landfall over the next 24 hours, bringing destructive winds of up to 260km/h to parts of Western Australia.

Tropical Cyclone Clare has been upgraded to category three and could become a category four storm as it moves towards the Pilbara region.
It is expected to hit land between Dampier and Karratha over the next 24 hours. The storm has surprised forecasters with its speed and rapidly growing power.

Australia's two biggest ports have been shut due to the cyclone, which also threatens to disrupt WA's massive resource industries.

The industrial ports of Dampier and Port Hedland - which export more than 200 million tonnes of iron ore and liquefied natural gas each year - were empty yesterday afternoon as Clare moved southwest, parallel to the Pilbara coast.

The Bureau of Meteorology said a cyclone watch is current for coastal areas from Onslow south-west to Coral Bay, and for inland parts of the Pilbara including Marble Bar and Tom Price.

At 11pm WST (2am AEDT), Cyclone Clare was located 270km north of Port Hedland and was moving south-west towards Karratha at 20km/h.
Residents of Port Hedland, Karratha, Onslow and Exmouth were preparing for the possibility of a direct hit late today or tomorrow. Coastal residents in the Pilbara, as well as residents of the inland town of Pannawonica, were on "blue" alert last night and told to expect gale force winds of up to 120km/h.

It said very destructive winds were likely as the system crosses the coast, and these may reach 260km/h if the system further intensified as expected.

Widespread heavy rain and flooding was also likely inland in the Pilbara region over the next few days, the bureau said.

Fire and Emergency Services Authority district manager Jim Cahill said Clare had developed much more quickly than other cyclones. "We've been surprised by the speed of this cyclone - it just emphasises to us how unpredictable they can be," he said.

The oil field on Barrow Island off the Pilbara coast was still producing yesterday afternoon but operator Chevron planned to evacuate non-essential staff.

At least 13 tankers, a dredge and a drill ship were charting a course around the eye of the cyclone last night.

Is this Normal this time of year for Australia?

Cyclone approaching WA coast

January 08, 2006

A CYCLONE off Western 's Pilbara coast is expected to intensify and move closer to land tomorrow.

Residents and travellers along the Pilbara coast have been warned that category-one cyclone Clare will likely impact on Tuesday.

The weather bureau today issued a cyclone warning for coastal areas between Cape Leveque and Port Hedland, while a watch extends from Port Hedland southwest to Exmouth.

At 5am (WST), Clare was 205 km northwest of Cape Leveque and 310 km north northwest of Broome, moving west southwest at 24 kph.

The bureau said Clare was expected to move parallel to the coastline for the next 24 hours. It was expected to intensify into a severe tropical cyclone in the next two days.

Clare is set to move closer to the coast during tomorrow and Tuesday, and affect the Pilbara coast by Tuesday.

I would think it's normal this time of year, considering it's the middle of summer down under.

Dang, thanks for the heads up Fast5. Our friends down under have been getting punded lately between the wild fires, heat wave and now this. Hopefully this won't hit them to hard and dump on some of those fires instead.

Cyclones are natural and expected this time of year in Oz. Our city has had a council cleanup, where any rubbish(in ppl's yards) that may become airborne missiles is left on the nature strip for council collection. This is a yearly occurrence.

I know our city is due another rip roarer like we had in '71. Thus far we've been blessed with only the occassional 'blow' happening. The '71 cyclone(Althea) pretty well wrecked the city.
