Here's some stats from the 2008 election: Take note of the last stat.

79% of Chicago 8th Graders 'Not Proficient in Reading'...Chicago teachers reject 16% pay raise & go on strike...sounds legit
For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. You're completely wrong there. Teachers are incredibly overworked and underpaid. I don't know anything specifically about the Chicago situation, but most teachers make about $50 grand a year and while the KIDS have lots of holidays, the teachers are usually still in the classroom grading papers or getting ready for the next time the kids will be in. They have to deal with so much more than just putting out a syllabus and teaching a few pages of books. They are extremely hard-working, disciplined and devoted to our kids. The vast majority of teachers do it for the love of teaching and our children, NOT for the big pay check. How many people do you know that have Master's Degrees and make $50 grand a year? In addition, teachers today face drugs, disciplinary issues, dysfunctional households and anger and stress issues that were unheard of even ten years ago. Every teacher we have is a gift and should be treated as such.

Education needs a complete overhaul. We are using a system today that worked for civilizations hundreds of years ago.

With social media and technology today, kids see school as a popularity contest and most are not even the slightest bit interested in learning.

I'm not begging for some big government reform, I'm just suggesting we start looking for a more efficient system.

One thing is certain, they learned their public political science curriculum well. Think about it, if you are going to strike against ANY politician in the world, who would have the least power to bust a union? Rahmbo. Benn selling out to unions all his life, so what's he going to do to stop them? Nothing or else he gets unelected. If I were the popo or city worker in Chitown, I'd be planning my strike next!

 Quoting: MikeOxmaul

I've talked to teachers about this. They say that almost all of them are required to get a master's degree so they are constantly studying. They also are required to plan for the next day's class on their own time and grade papers at night so they say even thought they get 3 months off they still put in the same amount of hours per year as a regular 9-5 job.

They also say that other careers that require a master's degree get more than $60k/year.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22281555

boo fucking hoo , if they were not fail at life they would have had one of those other jobs that pay more. those who can do , those who can't teach.

crying about work conditions alone means they are fail , they did no investigation into all the ins and outs of career teaching before starting it ?

nope all they saw was 185 days off a year , cushy retirement , not much physical effort , what a bunch of sweathogs in those pictures of the unionistas.
They should be able to pass the APFT or lose money every single month till they can.

That's what Reagan did back in the 80s when the Air Traffic Controllers went on strike. No chance in hell Obama will take the same course of action..

...in 1981, President Ronald Reagan fired more than 11,000 air traffic controllers who ignored his order to return to work. The sweeping mass firing of federal employees slowed commercial air travel, but it did not cripple the system as the strikers had forecast.

Reagan branded the strike illegal. He threatened to fire any controller who failed to return to work within 48 hours. Federal judges levied fines of $1 million per day against the union.

To the chagrin of the strikers, the FAA’s contingency plans worked. Some 3,000 supervisors joined 2,000 nonstriking controllers and 900 military controllers in manning airport towers. Before long, about 80 percent of flights were operating normally. Air freight remained virtually unaffected.

In carrying out his threat, Reagan also imposed a lifetime ban on rehiring the strikers.

you're both wrong

the main issue the CTU president has a problem with other than pay, is teacher evaluations

i.e. accountability

[link to www.breitbart.com]

[...]She was essentially saying that teachers cannot be expected to adequately instruct students, and should not be held accountable for their progress, because socio-economic conditions make learning impossible.

Is that really acceptable to the parents of Chicago?

Lewis and her liberal allies believe the situation can be addressed through massive social programs designed to defeat poverty and suddenly turn every Chicago household into a prosperous, functional unit. Once the gap between the haves and the have-nots has been closed, they believe the culture of drugs, violence and ignorance will disappear, and children will suddenly be able to learn.

Lewis, of course, if full of beans. The troubled culture in some areas of Chicago and other cities has more to do with a lack of moral standards and the breakdown of the family union than any economic factors. American history is full of stories of poor families that have embraced public education and proudly watched their children take advantage of their opportunities to earn a better life.

It's about time you MORONS woke up. They are being offered 4% a year for four years. In addition they probably are required to pay a larger % of their healthcare and retirement. The net result is LESS money being taken home in the finality. Given the current rate of inflation they then become double losers. The other issue and probably the driving one is EVALUATION. I once listened to a fella from Wisconsin who owned a very successful ice cream company. The point he made is that his success depended on the ingredients going into the product produced. They bought only the best and made sure their manufacturing process was matched with them and this is what he attributed his success too. Using this concept these teachers have no control over the raw materials sent to them. What walks through that door is what they get. They have no control over the process by which they are to accomplish their goal. They have no control over the forces which govern the supposed product they are to put out. In short they for the most part do the best they can with what they presented with. Although reading most of your MORONIC posts it is clear there has been mass failure. Perhaps you should sit down and analyze the REAL reasons for your failure rather than looking for someone or something to blame. Just sayin.........

Unions were great back in the day, back when you didn't get lunch breaks, there was no minimum wage, and OSHA wasn't around. Now it's just a way to get over paid and have job security because they cannot even fire you no matter how shitty you are at your job.
 Quoting: MikeOxmaul

Maybe everyone else is underpaid. And it's a myth that you can not be fired if you are in a Union. It's done all the time. The Union can appeal the termination and take it to an arbitrator but if it was a just termination then the Union will not waste the money or the time to appeal it.

The Teachers Union turned down a $400 million dollar plan, citing it's not enough. It's a 16% increase of current pay and they already are some of the highest paid teachers in the nation. Also the Graduation rate is only 56% for Students!!! Today 400k Students are on the streets when they should be in the classroom.

So let's say they are being asked to take a pay cut.

SO WHAT? JOIN THE CROWD! They are not being fired, which has happened to a lot of people who did nothing wrong.

Speaking of which, they want to be EVALUATED solely on things which they can control, in a way they can control. Well guess what, nobody else gets that. You get a bad boss, China makes the product cheaper, your boss decides to hire an H1B to replace you, a major customer leaves ... you get fired. That's how the world works these days UNLESS YOU'RE A TEACHER.

That argument about evaluations shows how sick the situation is. They must be exposed to the vagaries of the market, then they would stop acting like little kings and queens. They could be replaced by better, cheaper people. That should not be negotiable, it isn't for anyone else.

Once all Unions collapse, all the working stiffs will see their pay collapse. The dumb-asses don't know that their pay is HIGHER because the Unions set the pay bar. The owners and some of their cronies always just put the money in THEIR pockets.

Start looking for your used single-wide trailer to raise your families in non-union tards.

Keep competing against that slave labor and suck it up. Have your kids join the military, get fucked up, and kicked to the curb.
