Go out in a couple of hours and it won't be twinkling anymore. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23592283 Though, I have seen stars that do twinkle high in the sky such as Arcturus earlier this year. And a few others.. not sure though. Probably on nights of high humidity. The water and air scatters the light more the thicker the air is. |

So, you're saying this "star" is visibly moving...like a plane? If you can actually see this thing moving across the sky, then it is not a star. Probably a satellite. I've seem many of them that looked almost as if they were pulsating. |

Quoting: chula homa Same here. But I've noticed quite a few of them...for years. it hasnt always been like this? Yes, it has always been like this. Look it up in any old astronomy book. Stars lowest down, appear to twinkle far more than those overhead, and this is because when we look out of our atmosphere at a lower angle we are looking through far more turbulent air. The atmosphere works in a similar way to a prism, splitting light into various colours - but because of the turbulence, it does this intermittently, so we alternately see different colours from our fixed position on the ground. The effect also gives rise to the old saying... "Stars twinkle, but planets burn" Because stars are essentially a point-source of light (due to their immense distance), they suffer from atmospheric refraction far more than planets (which, though small, do have SOME size to them) If a star, and a planet of similar brightness, happen to be near each other in the sky - the planet will look 'steadier' However, when a planet is low enough, it's light has to pass through so many hundreds of miles of moving air, it too can appear to twinkle and change colour like this. |
