I have $700 to spend on a gun for the end of the world .What should I get? | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 16277870 Netherlands 09/15/2012 11:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm leaning towards a Ruger mini-14 tactical, or a 10/22 rifle and a .22 pistol. Not confident about the stopping power of the .22, but my accuracy is pinpoint. What do my fellow gun enthusiasts recommend? Quoting: ZeuZ $700 -- do NOT buy a pistol. Buy a long gun. Get a semi-automatic rifle. .22 cal will not stop someone but many people will have them so ammo should be abundant when TSHTF. A 30-06 will stop anybody but the ammo runs about $1.50 a round. You will have problems getting ammo after TSHTF, I think. Get a NATO-round-shooting semi-automatic rifle, e.g., a 5.56m weapon, e.g., an M4. There will be plenty of NATO rounds for the picking when TSHTF, I think, depending on counting coup. See here: [link to www.gunbroker.com] [link to www.youtube.com] |

But if u have a supporting team of 556 or 7.62 then it would be nice to have long range capability along. Whatever a person shoots the best. Hit's count... |

I could be over thinking everything, but with the shit that is going down around the world, it's stupid to not have something to protect yourself from the crazies. I just wish I had the resources to figure out how to turn a battery powered screw gun into a directional long-range electro-magnetic pulse generator. Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow, you may die. |

Lester User ID: 23753721 United States 09/15/2012 10:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | EOTW, eh??? Shotgun might be the tool if you are a city-dweller. 20ga can be fired much more readily than a 12ga from a pistol grip configuration. Lever action rifle is very viable. Marlin 336 in .30-30 is very reliable all-around weapon and can easily be scoped. Remington 700 ADL in .308win can probably be found at a pawnshop with a scope and bought for about $300 in good used condition. Great all-around rifle. Look for a quality bolt gun with a Leupold scope and offer about 2/3 the marked price. Tell pawnbroker you're paying cash... Probably will get your deal. Buy a Lee Loader and learn to handload your ammunition. Costs about $30 and is slow, but will make high quality handloads if you are not a complete idiot. Can likely scrounge empty ctg cases from the cans at your local gunrange, or ask shooters if they're saving their empty brass... Free brass makes shooting very affordable. Look for ammo deals at WalMart and on sale at the chains like Academy. Probably find Remington or Winchester ammo for $15 a box of 20. Might find Boxer primed surplus ammo cheap at gunshop... Can reload those empty cases. Rifle is the ticket. .308, .30-06 are the better all-around general purpose chamberings. Ammunition is the critical factor. When you handload, you can make rounds far superior to what you can generally buy at the sporting goods store. Good luck! |

Yeah, I'd do a ruger mini-14. It won't jam like an AR. Only use ruger parts for ruger and it will never let you down. As a footnote: get a ballistic calculator, know your grain, know your scope and know that what you aim at will drop with the right shot. Ruger for life. Anonymous Coward User ID: 23270441 Mexico 09/15/2012 10:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here is the reason. The 30 ot 6 is a standard military rifle, the step above the M16. ammo will be available. It's the most common rifle. I like a .270 better, but the former is more practical. Nothing beats a .22 long rifle AND, for the handgun you can snag a 38 special cheap. A good .306 will set you back $450. A good 22 $150 and a 38 special about $100. You will get all 3 in good quality for your price. More BANG for the buck |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1205298 United States 09/15/2012 11:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Do not buy an AR or AK if your budget is only $700. First, get a decent handgun that is concealable, such as the Glock 19. Get something in 9mm, .40 or .45 it doesn't matter which one. Glock and Springfield XD are good but there are other good brands out there. You should be able to get one for @ $500. Spend the other $200 on a hi-cap magazine and then the rest on ammo. Glocks and Springfields won't be picky on ammo. They will eat the cheap stuff without jamming. Make sure you take it to the range and get used shooting it. At least be able to hit the target. If TSHTF, you will be a target if you are seen carrying around an AR, AK, or shotgun. Someone who is more experienced and who has a group of buddies will see you as a potential threat and take you out. Your nice AR will be an incentive for people with a tactical advantage to kill you. You need to conceal your weapon and be able to blend in to the crowd. If TSHTF for real, then you will have plenty of free AR's laying around from dead armchair commandos. |
sinco User ID: 16458913 United States 09/15/2012 11:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ruger 10/22 for the win.. spend 250 on it in stainless and synthetic stock buy a shit wad of banana clips the burn up the rest on ammo.. Iits the most reliable and best shootin little weapons ever put out not to mention ammo is super cheap and it will fire even if ya haven't cleaned it in 4 years.. ar's are too finicky if you're not buying a. Olt and.even still if you drop.it in.the dirt good luck gettin it to fire without a field strip and clean.. fact... Ruger 10/22 and a kahr k9 pistol would be the ticket... And that's not just because what that's what I have. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1205298 United States 09/15/2012 11:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Another option is get a Hi Point carbine for under $300 in 9mm, .40, or .45 Then you can get a 10/22 for another $200. So that gets you 2 weapons with common calibers for about $500 and leaves $200 for hi cap magazines and ammo. |
