what the fucl are you saying, that a mechanic's labor is not worth $100/hr?

Obviously youve never owned a shop. Where the mechanic probobly made 45$ off the 2.5 - 3 hrs of work they preformed. Brake flush 30k is right. If the cars production date is in 08 which im sure it is.... The coolant is almost 5 YEARS old.... U think that shit doesnt break down?? The door locks and hinges was excessive and should have been a courtesy. But big shops have big overhead.

Theres alotttt of supplies/chemicals, rent, wages, warrantys ( no profit work ) , insurance ( large expense ) and plus.... The guy working on your car has double the cost you paid for that car in TOOLS he has to fix it with. Go buy all the shit they used at an auto parts store and u are at maybe 250( not including 1000's in the machines they use to flush )

But a wise man once said...." You dont pay me to turn a bolt..... You pay me to know which bolt to turn" the repair industry is struggleing. These guys dont make enough money to be ripping you off.

I never change my coolant and have never had a problem. I have a 1971 pickup that has had the same coolant since I rebuilt the engine in 1997, and a 1990 F150 that has had the same coolant since 2003 when I rebuilt that motor. I am anal with oil changes every 2500 miles using synthetic and STP, and new transmission fluid and filter every 30,000 or so. The only time I've ever felt the need to change coolant was back when GM was using that stupid red "Dexcool" shit that would eat away at the intake gaskets, and then I would change to the regular off the shelf anti freeze.

You went in giving them a blank check and they filled it in. You have no one to blame. Next time tell them what you want done. You didn't need a brake fluid change or radiator change. I'm surprised they didn't change your transmission fluid and air in your tires. Let the buyer be ware. Didn't they give you a written extimate before work was done? I believe this is the law now.

Back about 25 years ago I got off the graveyard shift and it was damn near -30 and I had the only car that would start, so I jumped everybody, drove the 5 miles home and had no heat. Pulled into the garage, opened the radiator cap and found anti freeze slush. That's the only time I ever had a problem with coolant, but it was the coldest it has ever been here in my lifetime.

Yep, sounds about average. I would have done the services one by one on my own. Cabin filter can be done on your own, I've done it, not simple, but not impossible - I'm just a skinny chick. Then there's the oil change - you can look for plenty of deals on this around town, usually. If you get tires at a place like Discount tire, regular rotations and pressure checks are free. Of course, you need to keep documentation of all your services to back up your warranty, but they don't have to be done by any particular shop or all at once. The other services also can be found for a steal, if you shop around. Of course, getting it all done at once can be worth it to some people.

it is such a scam--these service intervals

I bought a new van 9 years ago

first time i took it in for a service they did things unnescesarrily to the van---
I change the oil myself less then a month back and they did it again---blind, dishonest, selfish --

that was over 8 years ago.

I have NEVER taken it back to the dealer once and neve will--as yet i have never taken it to any mecahnic---I change the oil and filter every 1 or 2000 miles and use sea foam.

to hell with the wareentie validity

I have saved a ton of money---enought o more then cover any repairs.

just buy new and change the oil and filters--use sea foam.-- drive nice.

its so bad, these companies build in failure to their product lines.

they make their money on reapirs. parts and high turnover.

U are complety full of shit. Change ur oil every 7500 miles with conventional oil.?... The oil filter id be worried about at 5k due to build up from the shitty cheap oil people like yourself will buy and put in it. And if you put 100k on your car in 5 years your right( except for transmission ) but from what it sounds like u wont have a car at 100k. And no..... Im not a technician
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1541215
No shit? Says right in the front of the owner's manual too frequent of oil changes can damage the engine and void the warranty and for Nissan that interval is set at 7,500 mi. There is no such thing as cheap motor oil now days, durp. Says to test or replace the CVT fluid at 60,000 miles for severe duty; there is a dummy light on the dash. CVT (clutchless transmission) has 10 year / 120,000 mile warranty. You sound like one of those Ford guys that is all.

I appreciate this response, some good info to store away as this is what makes the most sense to me. It is just a bit taxing on folks who have expertise in fields other than vehichle maintenance to actually know all there is to know therefore we rely on folks who DO KNOW. We hope they don't take advantage. I have expertise in education and law but I don't use this to defraud people...

Anyway thanks to all who have offered their opinions and advice I have read every single one and taken mental notes.

Saw a tv show a few years back where they went around to gas stations, name brand kinda places and tested the octane levels and found that none of them had any significant difference in the octane levels, yet they all sold the pricier gases purported to be high octane and allegedly better for your engine. People believe it and shell out more for the good of their engines but are being duped. Someone posted about stupid people putting shitty gas in their cars. I never go for the fancy when I've seen the shitty gas is just as good.

Why I avoid auto mechs like the plauge, and why Autozone
has them lined up every saturday, getting parts to do
their own service.
Most cars these days have lifetime coolant, only needs topping off.
Most of what was done, like hinge lube, would be unnessesary
in such a young car, don't need plugs until car starts skipping.
Don't need a "tune up" in a car with electronic ignition.
NEVER take your vehicle to a dealer, biggest crooks on
the planet.
They say you will void your warranty, what they don't tell you is that the maintenence can be done somewhere else,
and cheaper.
Get a shop manual, you will be surprized at what you can
do yourself.
They saw you coming, for sure

We need mechanics like we need people in every other profession. As a teacher I made 50 dollars a day which in truth was less than 10 bucks an hour but there were nice benefits. I just fail to see how changing an air filter constitutes 100.00 an hour. I do realize the mechanics are not to blame and most likely see very little reward for their efforts... The system is f'dd and I digress .......again a heartfelt thank you to all who have offered advice

hello friend i think i understand your frustration

price sounds right for the dealer but i would have

been very specific on what was to be serviced

you were taken by the stealership

scheduled maintenance is an oil change every 7,500 miles

and an engine air filter every 30,000 miles at your

local wal-mart or whatever

the rest is optional bullshit and probably doing

more harm than good

newer cars are designed to go 100,000 miles without problems

you can even do the service yourself if you wish to

keep all your receipts in a safe place for warranty purposes

now you know

btw car techs are too stupid to cert and work on airplanes

plus they sit around a lot (economy) that is why they

are so sore
