The mechanic is only making 25 dollars per hour in this ECONOMY today. Yes it sucks being a mechanic, and be mad at the SERVICE ADVISOR, not the MECHANIC. Half the time the person selling your work is making the same money as the mechanic struggling. |

Quoting: BZB well that is what I said, amounted to about 100 bucks and hour. I have two degrees and cant make that Most mechanics get paid $20 something an hour, so NO, a mechanic is not worth $100 hour. Fuck these god forsaken fucking shops and their greedy management. Why should they get paid $80/hr to do NOTHING? Yeah... Those damn do-nothing business owners. How dare they charge a rate over and above their labor cost so that they can pay for the building/land lease, overhead, taxes, utilities, payroll, inventory etc. and then hopefully make a profit on top of all that. |

They are destroying their own market. People will stop driving soon if cost of driving gets too high. Mechanics better pray that gas costs stay affordable or they will be out of business. Not saying it is their fault costs are too high, but then again no one ever held a gun to their head and made them take out loans for buildings. No one forced them into this business. I can't blame them entirely. People have gotten so functionally retarded they can't even change the oil on their own car. Most of these maintenance jobs are things that EVERYONE can do. Even grandmothers if they don't mind getting a little dirty. Mechanical repairs are a little more involved, but if you have basic reading skills a shop manual can guide you through most repairs. There is a conceptual learning curve, you have to understand how car engines work. Again not difficult if people are willing to take the time to learn. I forced myself to learn how to work on my own car because I just couldn't stand getting soaked every time something broke on the car. Believing me THE TIME YOU SPEND LEARNING AND GETTING YOUR HANDS DIRTY WILL PAY FOR ITSELF IN THE LONG RUN. Please, especially women, because you get soaked more than anyone. Learn how to work on your car, at least do your own maintenance. It's not hard. It really isn't. It just takes some self confidence. There is no reason people shouldn't be able to change their oil and filter. If you know nothing about cars, start with changing the oil and filter. Then get a haynes or chilton manual and then work through all the maintenance projects listed in the front section. Once you have completed that, you should have enough self confidence to tackle greater projects and repairs. Read the shop manual it explains a lot about cars and how they work. There are also some excellent sites on line for learning as well. Before you know it you will be having fun working on your car! There is no better feeling than driving your car after YOU fixed it. |

What is with all this oil changing? I have never had my transmission oil changed and I have done nearly 300,000 is just one car. I do at least 100,000 miles in a car before selling it. My car is has a service schedule of every 18,000, that is the only time the oil is changed. Why do change the oil so often in the USA? |

This is what happens when you let a car go without changing the oil. |

It's not just the dealers who will overcharge. I have seen my fair share of customer rip offs. Best advice I can give is service your car for what is recommened by the manufacture. Dealers are very competitive for oil changes, and tire rotates. There are unseen benefits to servicing your car at the dealer. We many times will goodwill a repair for a customer who buys and services at our dealer. Even if they don't buy the upsells. |

Why I avoid auto mechs like the plauge, and why Autozone Quoting: bvndy has them lined up every saturday, getting parts to do their own service. Most cars these days have lifetime coolant, only needs topping off. Most of what was done, like hinge lube, would be unnessesary in such a young car, don't need plugs until car starts skipping. Don't need a "tune up" in a car with electronic ignition. NEVER take your vehicle to a dealer, biggest crooks on the planet. They say you will void your warranty, what they don't tell you is that the maintenence can be done somewhere else, and cheaper. Get a shop manual, you will be surprized at what you can do yourself. They saw you coming, for sure These are wise words. Fucking heed them you sheep. |

They gave me a check list of ALL the NICE things they had done for me. I noticed they checked the battery. I said "really?" how, guy fired off some drivle, I said well show me the battery and what you checked. ( I knew full damn well the battery of my Fiat was located in the TRUNK and I had the keys.) Dude fell flat on his face. Live and let live.......really |

I have two degrees and cant make that I assume your lease says you have to maintain the car, at your own expense? That is why not to lease. We only lease because my husbands job requires that 80% of his business involves his vehicle. It is all tax deductable and he gets a new car every three years.... But for personal use I would never lease and I have to say I LOATHE leasing except for the tax breaks..... Live and let live.......really |
