China has charts and maps, that include the Diaoyu-Tai islands, dating back centuries. The name Diaoyu-Tai means fishing table/platform as the islands have historically been used by Chinese fishermen for centuries as a base during long fishing runs.

It's the descendents of Kunihara who are selling the islands to Japan. However, as China has never acknowledged the illegal occupation, the sale is void in their eyes. For the last 40 years, China and Japan had an unwritten agreement that nobody should develop or official claim sovereignty over the islands and both parties have left it as an unresolved dispute. However, with Japan's move of official buying the islands and claiming sovereignty, they have broken the agreement and hence China's anger and reaction.
