Thanks for that info....It really does make interesting reading- there have been quite a few devastating quakes in the region havent there....and tsunamis as well. Not a good history.

I thought perhaps I may find some historical info relating quake swarms to a large event in the region...but I cant find any quake swarms in the region prior to this latest one....so anything possible with this scenario.

I have noticed a pattern here in NZ...we have a spot off East Cape that has swarms ....Not quite as many quakes as that but in a very similar spot by a subducting plate. Over history the swarms have often stopped after a much larger quake that has followed the swarm...but normally further up the plate from where the swarm occurs. If the same thing were to occur at British VIrgin Islands the corresponding area at risk would be Cuba.....

But like I keep saying...there is no precedent for this from what I can find...

Thanks for the research you have put in about these swarms. I have been watching the one off the East Coast and the maps you have put up of the British Virgin Islands really helps me picture how things are going over there.

Love ur avatar...gives that happy kind of feeling!

...the swarms off the East Coast of NZ are interesting in that the last one has kept on going....whereas in the past they have lasted for a month or so then died down for long periods....

Think we are way overdue for a 7.0 quake in the Kermadec region but fortunately after swarms like this, the big one is often nice and deep so hopefully wont be damaging...

I am trying to get some proper research compiled but had a big problem with my computer and lost a lot of what I had, so having to redo it...

We are definitely overdue for a 6.0+ quake in a populated area....

One of the concerns in this area is that a quake will cause part of the trench to collapse in to the depth of the Puerto Rican Trench, displacing a large volume of material causing a tsunami to hit the north coast with practically no warning.

Yes that area is so close to your coast alright....hope it never happens...disastrous!

But if history is anything to go it is inevitable there will be another quake induced tsunami at some stage. Do they do much in the way of preparation with the population there?

I lived 100 metres from Papamoa Beach in the BOP and had horrible feelings of unease- was so pleased when we moved away from there ....they didnt even have warning sirens at the time ( I believe they are working on it now ). Am so glad I dont live coastal anymore...

I live in Nosara, Costa Rica. After the 7.6 it's non stop aftershocks 4.3 last night (which felt like a previous 5.6) and a 4.4 this morning. Probably will have them for quite some time. here is an average day (as of now) on this side of the Caribbean plate. This added to El Salvador's recent 7.6 make this side a really shaky place.

Would these have anything to do with that side by the VI? It's part of the same plate right? Excuse my ignorance but after this last month life has revolved around learning about earthquakes.

Yep...definitely related. There is a lot of great information here..

The pictures a little small though but gives a great idea of the complex nature of the forces at play in such a small region.

I'm so glad someone else is finally watching this swarm!

The Virgin Island swarm started up when the Brawley swarm started. While Brawley quieted done - this one hasn't.

During the Brawley swarm, I noticed a slight pattern. If Brawley had a quake over 3.0, then the Virgin Islands countered with a similar size, although usually larger, quake between 17 and 30 minutes. Or it was the other way round...hard to tell which came first.

I knew then that VI was the place to be watching and Brawley was just the side show. ::nods::

It is quite unusual to have such an ongoing strong swarm like that is being recorded in the VI....especially considering all the smaller tremors that wont even make the record.

It shows absolutely no sign of dying off and the other big difference is Brawley has had lots of swarms like the last one over the years...but the Virgin Islands does not appear to have had any swarms like the one it is currently experiencing....so unknown territory for the experts!

ANd now that California / Mexico has started up again....Virgin Islands has stopped.....definitely something going on that is related between these two areas. Does that mean there will be a bigger one in the Virgin Islands again soon...?

Guys,

This is a massive dark matter particle orbiting above and below the earth @ hundreds of miles/sec. They can trigger earthquakes and other bad things. I cover it on my blog @ darkmattersalot.com

The swarm going on the Mid Atlantic ridge is strange . Makes you wonder if they are connected.

Update...as of 09/10/2012 there were 548 quakes in the last 30 days so swarm has slowed down in the Islands....but have noticed there is som sort of a correlation between the VIrgin Island quakes and the Californian/Mexico events...there have been three occasions in the last 21 days where a quake in the Mexico region has been followed by a ramping up of Quakes in California...the last 24 hours being a great example...where there was a 6 magnitude in the GUlf Of Mexico and this has been followed by quakes all along California.....and the Virgin Islands has all but stopped with only two quakes on the hot spot in the last 24 hours...

There is definitely a correlation between the two areas and their earthquake 'swarms'..I believe there is obviously a an exchange of pressure going on between the two areas and its gonna be a case of one or the other letting off a big amount of energy soon....
