Sinkhole update................ “Heed evacuation orders” | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 24682341 Poland 09/30/2012 10:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Natural Gas/Methane is odorless. Meaning that if you walk into a confined space with a high enough concentrate of it you wont know it until it's too late. Gas companies add a chemical to it called "mercaptan" which is sulfur based and thus makes the gas smell like rotten eggs. They add this so that one knows they have a leak present. If you went out to the sink hole you wouldn't be able to smell the gas at all, because it's unrefined and straight from the source. If you do smell anything at all it's from the rotten earth being "stewed" up. |

Quoting: mikebo2 It's not like a sink-hole is something new. You shush up... they said its gonna split the continent in two and they are never wrong!!! No you shush up! They say it is no different than road kill smell, so if you are sick from it, it's on you. And nothing is going to happen, go home and go back sleep we have it all under control. nothing to worry about, it's just a lil ol sinkhole. Yeah that's what they said in Marion, Ohio too. At River Valley High School kids were getting leukemia at a rate higher than the national average COMBINED. My aunt lived near there and we spent alot of time at her house when I was younger (my Mom ended up getting leukemia and is now dead) but to make a long story short, the EPA was called in to do an "investigation" on what was going on at the school over summer break. They found barrels of toxic waste underneath the school and found that it had been built over an old military toxic waste dump. The EPA said nothing was wrong and it was completely "safe" YET, they shipped the children off to all different schools that September and tore down the school and built a new one. Miraculously the leukemia rate in the school went down significantly. HOWEVER, Marion still has a HUGE cancer rate because we grow and process GMO corn and soybeans right in the middle of town. Central Soya and Wyandot Popcorn..... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 20317174 United States 09/30/2012 11:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Louisiana sinkhole engulfing entire 1-mile by 3-mile salt dome...The entire area of the 1-mile by 3-mile Napoleonville Salt Dome is sinking, according to Bayou Corne sinkhole evacuee Harry Boudreaux, [link to www.examiner.com] Quoting: S.A.W. The top of the sinkhole expanded to 4-acres large this week, swallowing more trees and part of a road built to expedite cleanup activities, according to officials. That was a 1500 square foot additional section of the earth that caved into it, according to parish officials, who have repeatedly stated that scientists expect the sinkhole to continue expanding. An oil slick in the sinkhole area is now so powerful, it can be smelled a half-mile from La. 70 that is near its boundary. The diesel vapors are making some residents ill, they say. Late last week, an unknown substance was found at the bottom of the cavern. Locals worry about an explosion, the earthquakes they are feeling, and that the sinkhole will consume them on any given night. They say that they have been frustrated for almost two months due to not being well enough informed earlier about matters such as the Texas Brine collapsing cavern near the sinkhole having radioactive waste pumped into it and the massive butane-filled well that is only 1500 feet from the collapsing salt cavern. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 726900 Puerto Rico 10/01/2012 01:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | can I just add my .02, i'm sure you all will hate it but, oh wells. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16678904 I come from a place where we had NG wells all OVER the place, many of them ruptured or leaked, all the time. You would just go outside, and it would smell like you left the stove on, with no flame on in the kitchen, but outside... back in the good ol boy days when they'd get to it when they can... i used to set fireworks off next to said gaswell, maybe 50 feet away b/c after 10 years, it never did anything but stink b/c of the tracer in the gas, but it was strong, it never went boom. I really think you guys need to look into fuel air ratios, and just how difficult it is to get a FA explosion to work. Bubbles don't = boom. It took until the 1990's for them to even perfect FA bombs (MOAB, etc.), if it were that easy, it wouldn't have taken them 50 years longer than developing a fricking atomic bomb I'm not saying it couldn't happen, I'm not saying flour mill, coal mine, dust mill, NG explosions haven't happened.. what I'm saying is that it is has to be a perfect storm of many factors to all come together at just the same point in time to happen.... and usually in a confined space!! If it is to gas out, then only those areas with the correct ratio will explode, sorry, but true, it won't fly up the pipes all across the country and blow the states to smithereens... Look into Fuel Air explosions, how they are local, how they have to have a perfect mix and match of requisites, and how long it took to develop something like the MOAB/ etc... it doesn't just happen,, usually... your looking at a 1/100 shot here, but dooming over it. so, that's where I see this... I hope I'm RIGHT!!.. b/c I pray for no doom, honest, I do... Your sense of reason and lack of imagination are not welcome here. Heheh, all sarcasm aside, thanks for this!!! lol, sorry, we even called the gas well whistler b/c so much gas escaped from it, it whistled through the hole in the pipe... gas company didn't seem to care. we had bonfires in that field, and would do fourth of july in that field, over decades of it whistling, we just learned that it just wouldn't happen... so, fuggit... I'm not saying it's not dangerous, but, man, so many things would have to come together! And that right there is the worst part about GLP to the uninitiated. People out there, possibly living in the affected area, might be stumbling upon threads like this while simply scouring google for SOMETHING of an answer as to what is going on only to get the fuck scared out of em after coming here. Real-world scenarios that aren't laden with bullshit, such as yours, are I think VERY helpful to the nail biter pissing themselves over the situation at hand. It was the same thing with the BP "disaster", Fukushima (I'm still mixed on that one, personally) and countless others in between. There are gems to be found on GLP, such as your $.02. It's unfortunate you gotta wade through so much crap to get there though sometimes. So true, the ignorant hysterics here are almost enough to make one lose faith in humanity. |

It's a pain for the locals, I'm sure, but it is a local problem just the same. Sure a very large area could and seems to be collapsing into the abyss of this salt dome, BUT IT'S NOT GOING to split the country in half for Christ's sakes. It will get only as big as the circumstance of the dome, worst case scenario. It's a confined space; therefore, it will likely not reach the proper ignition rich mixture EXCEPT at certain flair points, worst case scenario, if at all. Sure it's killing trees, but it's a local phenomenon. GLP has a strong tendency to take a small event and turn it into a worldwide catastrophe of monumental proportions. GLP is chock full of Chicken Littles, bar none. |

grefey User ID: 24294934 United States 10/01/2012 08:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This why I believe that the GOM oil spill was done intentionally(the well head is at the end of the New Madrid fault line) and not to kill us specifically although they really don't give a damn. But rather to relieve geological pressure in the GOM and on the NEW MADRID FAULT LINE, as there is no doubt in my mind that it was an intentional "comedy of errors" that occurred. In addition, if you watch the documentary "Gasland" you will notice that all the fracking that is being done is in areas of high geological stress or instability. Thousands of wells have been sunk around Yellowstone and smaller amounts in AK. I do not think this is a coincidence. It looks like they are trying to relieve stresses in the earth through mechanical means. I am no geologist but it makes sense to me. So the question is how much longer can they kept the lid on, so to speak? |
