A showdown is looming between Jordan's government and the Islamist opposition, with two massive rival demonstrations slated for Friday in the capital Amman, raising fears of an escalation of tension. According to organisers, around 200,000 supporters of King Abdullah II's plans for reforms will rub shoulders with an expected 50,000 backers of the Muslim Brotherhood, the main opposition bloc, with the rallies set to take place at the same time

Jordan's king has dissolved parliament, paving the way for early elections, says the state's official news agency.

The royal decree follows Abdullah II's pledge to bring in political reforms aimed at avoiding anti-government unrest in the wake of the Arab Spring.

Jordanians have been pressing for a greater say in how their country is run and demanding corruption be tackled.

Jordan's Muslim Brotherhood said in July its political party, the Islamic Action Front, would boycott the polls.

They said recent changes to electoral law did not go far enough, and warned of further public protests.

So far, protests in Jordan have been more peaceful than elsewhere in the region.

The announcement from the royal palace came on the eve of a major opposition rally to demand reforms.
