To repeat:

California has strike-slip faults that can only produce quakes of 8.3 mm... you need a subduction zone to get the shakers of the 8.9 variety.

We ain't got no subduction zones in California. You gotta sail northward up the coast quite a ways to find one of them there really badass faults.

It is probably coming to your area. Where do you live ?
