Can pregnant women take it?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4781813

You should be taking at least 10,000 IU daily, even after you deliver as it will secrete in your milk & will help boost the immunity of your baby.
 Quoting: mopar28m

^^^This makes me somewhat uneasy. Babies concentrate nutrients because they're so tiny. Agressive supplementation seems very unwise whether in utero or if breastfeeding afterwards.
There is good reason prenatal vites are quite weak seeming for a pregnant mother, that is because they can damage development, especially containing Iron or ferrous fumerate you can kill a baby with adult supplements!
No Kidding!scared
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16213681

no need to generalize. You could get huge amounts of natural vid d from the sun and the baby will be more healthy. As for the supplements vit d3 can be dangerous taken in huge amounts only because of the other substances they use in the capsule. like calcium.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1546575

Why the redundancy? Of course the sun. I was responding to a specific comment and high dose effects on infants pre and post birth.
Mothers need the info from somewhere.

Re: Vitamin D3 discussion
I've been taking D3 for years. I currently take 8,000iu a day. Last blood test showed 49. One of the nurses who was taking my information last dr. visit (2 months ago) saw my list of supplements and said "What is vitamin D3?" She's in the medical profession and didn't know what it was. Reminds me of 10 years ago Dr. saw my supplement list and asked me "Why are you taking Fish Oil??!" That was before it became mainstream to take it.

The sun is the absolute best source for D. I get anywhere from 1-4 hrs. a day (Florida) and at 68 never sick, play tennis 6-7 days a week and feel better than in my 30's.I never go to doctors and am on no drugs for 20 plus years. The sun is your best source for health, even animals know this, they lay in morning sun often.

One discrepancy flyover here is D3 & Iodine from fish, kelp and even sea salt which is uncontaminated and tested as being so.
Virtually every nutrient we pull from the oceans and seas routinely up until the recent past could merit a level of trust from certain regions, but no more.
..and we all know the drill as to why.

Maybe a good idea to look squarely at this, you know, "et the upper hand before it gets you" as my scorpio father used to say. :D

Re: Vitamin D3 discussion
Vitamin D increases the calcium absorption. The key then is to take Magnesium 500mg every day.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12698388

I'm glad someone mentioned this right away, we had a great long thread on Vitamin D here some time back and this issue of making sure you get plenty of magnesium came up, it's a really good point.

People get too much calcium as it is, and not enough magnesium. Taking Vitamin D can push the imbalance higher.

Magnesium is critical and we get very little from our food. A lot of supplement forms are poorly utilized. Don't take magnesium oxide, a common, cheap one, one to avoid. I have taken magnesium glycinate and recently magnesium chloride which comes in a liquid form.
 Quoting: Vision Thing

Read somewhere once that long term use of the d3 tablets that contain the calcium based stuff will clog the heart up. Any truth in that ?
 Quoting: Sword of mercy

That's why people suggest vitamin K2. As I read somewhere "it keeps the calcium where it's supposed to be (in the bones) and not where it's not supposed to be (in the arteries)".

Out of curiosity but has anyone had their teeth start hurting after taking vitamin d for 2-3 weeks consistently. I know someone who had to stop it because their teeth became sensitive on vitamin d.

There are tanning beds available for those who have the money and do not want to take pills.

You would want to use the ones with "electronic ballast" rather than "magnetic ballasts."

Most tanning parlors have beds with magnetic ballasts.

I am no expert on it.......but it is another option to consider during the winter months.

Maybe these two factors are just coincidental and not related. Causes for sensitive teeth take years to develop, gingivitis becoming periodontal..those little exposed gumline upper root honeycombs lead to nerve endings waiting to scream. Teeth/gums respond to direct application of CoQ10. Systemic route is rarely efficient.

Re: Vitamin D3 discussion
About 80 to 90 percent of folks are also deficient in magnesium and there is a connection between magnesium and Vit D3.

Here is a snippet from the article...but there is more, so read the whole thing.

"Magnesium and vitamin D

Magnesium has been found to influence the body’s utilization of vitamin D in the following ways: Magnesium activates cellular enzymatic activity. In fact, all the enzymes that metabolize vitamin D require it. 3 4 Low magnesium has been shown to alter, by way of decreasing, production of vitamin D’s active form, 1,25(OH)2D (calcitriol). 5

Magnesium is needed to exert positive influence over the human genome and may be involved in the genetic actions of vitamin D. Magnesium possibly has a role in vitamin D’s effect on the immune system. 6

Animal studies have shown magnesium is also necessary for vitamin D’s beneficial actions on bone."

With a health condition that affects bone & joint health, numerous dexa scans, and a couple of autoimmune disorders, even the 8000 IU of Vitamin D3 I take a day doesn't get absorbed due to Celiac.
 Quoting: Fraeguile

There is a direct connection between Magnesium and VitD3. Celiac patients are low in magnesium...so you might want to take a look at this article, and supplement with magnesium. Sounds like it would help. It's important to always look deeper, because traditional allopathic approach never does.

To the AC with MS and to Fraeguile,
There is research out there that suggests you should NOT be taking Vit.D if you have an autoimmune disease! Please google the "Marshall Protocol". My son has a Vit.D3 level of 10 and Hashimotos. He was told by an endocrinologist to stay away from this vitamin. I believe the theory is that it revs up the immune system and by doing so it can exacerbate the immune attacks. I honestly don't know what to believe, but you may want to check it out.

I read a few posts here regarding D3. What are the benefits and how many IU should I take?
 Quoting: ***ClappaGuy***

Until recently, I could buy 10k IU gelcaps at Costco or SAMs Club. I did stock up, and have enough for a few months. I take 50k IU daily.

The best I can find now are 5k IU, so I'll just have to suck it up and take more pills than before. Not giving up the Vitamin D-3.

 Quoting: Hi 24247817

calcium and magnesium is the hardest thing for your body to absorb so instead....

try spraying calcium and magnesium into your mouth instead and you will absorb 90% right into the blood stream through the inside lining of your mouth, COMPLETELY by-passing the GI tract.

pure and organic and these pills you people are taking are only 10% absorbed at the most and a waste of money.

pour a little vinigar in a glass and then put one of your pills in there and see how long it takes to break down.

if it takes more than 15 or 20 minutes you are getting very little benefit and why do you think your urine changes colors?

that is the excess nutrients that your body cannot absorb.

the graph at this link is listed in the PDR, Physicians Desk Reference, which as we all know is the bible of the medical profession.

these sprays are more absorbed than a shot of B-12 in the ass, which is only 80% absorbed because you lose 20% in the muscle.

only way you can do better is with an IV....

why do you think they put nitro in a spray container that all para-medics carry with them?

because 30 seconds is much quicker to the heart than a tablet under the tongue at 4 or 5 minutes.

this is the technology of the future, a paradigm shift, and they are working on putting insulin in spray containers so there would be no more needles for diabetics.

Anyone know how vitamin d3 affects body fat? Does it reduce body fat at all? I have read that d3 deficiency is linked to obesity and childhood obesity. Makes sense since kids no longer play outside in the sun choosing the couch/video game route instead. I'm wondering if anyone has noticed fat reduction since supplementing...

My guess would be that it helps overall in the body being able to regulate the metabolism better. I had the opposite problem, being too skinny. Since I started to supplement along with eating more healthy, I've added the meat on my bones that was missing. So I would believe the opposite would be true too.

Good question!
