Re: I QUIT SMOKING , YOU CAN TOO. I QUIT SEPT 27, 2012, SUPPORT EACH OTHER HERE
TWO DAYS AGO I WENT PARTIALLY BLIND IN ONE EYE DUE TO SMOKING !

Sorry to shout, but as this is my first posting on this thread I wanted to get peoples attention (GRIN)

I am a woman in her 60's who smokes home rolled ciggies, works from home, so pretty much a chain smoker.Have smoked since I was 18 BUT very heavily the last ten years or so.

I simply wasn't bothered. I like nicotine, i loved smoking, couldn't care less about health warnings. I can afford tobacco.Pretty fit, no health problems, zero eye problems.

Last fFiday I woke up with a shady area in the bottom part of my eye. I thought it was a bit odd but I wasn't overly concerned at first.

Saturday my sister visited. She has been partially sighted from birth and will soon loose it all. SHE FREAKED OUT !
She was very angry at me, and just to make her feel better I made an appointment to see an optician.

This morning 10am saw an optician. He phoned my local hospital for an immediate appointment. (still a bit smug and unconcerned at this point) until he said "how soon can you get there?"

I now panic!
I have to call in family and friends to help as drops in my eyes mean I can not drive. I need my car driven home, i need my dogs transported to my dads (food, crates etc) I need someone to contact my boss ! I have to get someone to step in and cancel my work appointments.

I get to hospital. I don't know all the right terms for these tests BUT it will give you an idea.

First. standard eye tests. One eye, lower half cloudy and blind. Others Great.

Second. Photographs of eye, lower half of one showing almost no blood supply.

Third. an ultra sound scan (Like a baby) scan

Fourth. (scary) Brain MRI scan (starting to think brain tumour)

Fifth. Blood test results. !!! Build up of cyonide !

I quite arrogantly dismissed the term carciogens when all the anti smokers give voice BUT it appears that the blood results show I have a very high amount of cyonide in my blood coupled with nearly zero vitamin B.

OK.

This post to GLP is my very FIRST acknowledgement that I MUST stop smoking. I am such a confirmed smoker that immediately after I left the opticians my FIRST call was to get some nicotine chewing gum as I knew I couldnt go to hospital without "supplies"

I am back home now after 12 hours of tests, my dogs are with my family and this is the first time I have been alone in over 20 years.

(getting a bit emotional now, but anyone who has a labrador, or little daschund terrier will understand how I miss them)

BUT to get back to the thread.

I HAVE stopped smoking as of NOW.
I have got nicotine chewing gum.
I miss the "click" of a cigarette lighter so i have sent off for one of those dog clicker things.
I have sent for a hypnosis book and CD from an english man called paul mckenna who I have found very helpful in the past.

I did think about starting a new thread, and I may do in future BUT I think that the longevity of your thread shows that many people need help, as do I. and may see my "48 hour warning"

I may post a new thread, but to be honest,I would rather contribute to an on going and effective thread.

I see that my problem could be reversible.
I want my dogs back !

Very scared !
BUT I AM AN ARROGANT SO AND SO !

Thanks for reading.
Please let me know if you think I should start an extra thread. Any and all comments would be helpful at this time.

Thank you

i'm half way through alan's book again... it's not the answer, but it sure helps coming from a life time smoker...

you would fail in any of my classes, or ran any of behaviour managament papers.... you were the one taught by a dumbarse...

you never fail right? the people who taught you never failed right? wrong.

you can call it a fail if you like... it is actually very human, and called an 'attempt'

what you do with your 'attempt' is learn something, or learn nothing and throw that attempt and any further effort in the bin.

you cracked the shits if you couldn't do stuff in school the first time, am i right?

you don't 'teach' people to be perfect... and if you are a true teacher, you don't teach them what YOU know, you teach them how to seek or find their own answers to their own questions... true teaching is facilitation, not regurgitation....

.... dumb arse....

further, and back to topic, i learned truck loads.

i learned i could do it.
i learned what the biggest trigger for me was.
i learned how to be successful the 'next time', and if not, the time after that.
i learned that what people like you say, means absolutely fuck all.
i learned that we were roped in by actors and elite personalities to fund this ridiculous social activity, for no personal gain, and when i quit, they no longer get my support or money.

i could go on, but you sound like an annoying bored holyer than thou sort....

settle petal...

I was merely elucidating what one would consider a reasonably elementary supposition; that is, to revert, is a succinct and complete expression in and of itself.

calling someone an arsehole is not the way to step into a debate.

and if the millions of smokers listened to the it makes you sick, it is poisonous it is emotional attachement etc [et al] wouldn't you think they would have given up by now?

ALL drug addiction is mired in self-deprecation and substance excuses....

how long did you smoke for?

you eat refined suger? you're gunna die.. probably get fat and diabetic on the way...

you drink coffee? alcohol? you're gunna die ... there goes your heart muscles... maybe even an anurism...

the list goes on... i don't go to diabetic threads and tell them to stop eating sugar and call them names... lack of maturity and wisdom right there fella...

i'm sure there was a chapter on that in your Cert III.....

30 years.

Joints, in the main.
But don't be believing the crap that THC is the good guy and nicotine is the debil

Its a habit....

Its not so hard to break....

I used champix for about 6 days.

So, I wish you the best, but in all seriousness, the desire NOT to die from smoking is, or should be, stronger than the desire to smoke.

ok, so now we're talking....

that is the interesting point to me... "the desire NOT to die from smoking is, or should be, stronger than the desire to smoke."

what if it's not? really, when considering it takes cigs a long time to 'getcha', and a bus all of three seconds, that logic is proven to be flawed in the quitting psychology game...

Re: I QUIT SMOKING , YOU CAN TOO. I QUIT SEPT 27, 2012, SUPPORT EACH OTHER HERE
I quit about a year and a half ago. It was tough for me - did it cold turkey.
Got an app on my phone to track the $ and time I was saving my quitting and how my health was improving. At first, I checked it every couple of hours - it was like a game.

The thing NO one talks about is the negative side effects of quitting!
Thought I had the flu. Lasted a couple of months - it was insane, but worth it to stop smiling king and killing myself.

Loved smoking, but I knew in my soul I was very slowly and surely giving myself a death sentence.

I think the regret component sinks in fairly relentlessly.

Gop to an emphysema ward for a walk...as you will be the only one able to.

Up to you.

I choose not to do suicidal things for spiritual reasons.

I became a happy non-smoker today. Maybe a non-drinker as well.
Time will tell.

I am on day 2. I am using the gum. Day 1 sucked. Today is a bit better. I thought with gum everything would be easy. Boy was I wrong.

Well, I didn't 'succeed' in the technical sense, in quitting, but I do want to commend this thread and the folks here for being an inspiration to examine my habits.
I have always been a casual smoker...a pack (maybe a touch more) a week.
I found this thread and caught the wave, and managed a day, but went back, at a lesser rate.
(had increased my normal 3/d in the last 2 years, subtly, unconsciously)
so to me this has been a great success.
I never wanted to quit, as I do truly enjoy the experience, both for separating self from the herd, and for the sheer pleasure of being 'bad'....in addition to my actual physical pleasure.
So, thank you all for the impetus to look at my slow slide into unconsciousness!

It is far from easy, but if you beat it the rewards are priceless.
