I always interpreted the Rapture to be the onslaught of a zombie apocalypse. Think about it, IF the Rapture is real, what would happen to the now empty bodies left behind? Rapture/Ascension happens in an instant for those that are ready, the empty vessels they leave behind will act as a broom, sweeping the remnants of us away. This is also the fate that sealed the tomb on Dinosaurs once and for all. They could withstand millions of years of disasters, from asteroids to volcanoes but when Ascension comes knocking... Nothing survives the zombie broom.
