They do, but the equation is poorly written by someone intentionally attempting to make a mess of mathematical syntax so the calculator will be wrong. They're not foolproof.

=4x4-4x4+4x4+4 (just writing the equation in an other order, doesn't change anything as it is addition/substraction)

=0 +4x4+4 (because 4x4-x4x =0)

=16+4

=20

Correct. Math requires that all multiplication and division be completed before the addition and subtraction of the resulting terms. If, however, just types in the formula from left to right, the calculator will have garbage in and will return garbage out.

Which is why RPN (reverse polish notation) works much better in a calculator - you can feed anything in without having to use parenthesis.

In RPN, the data goes first, and the operation follows, with the result saved for use by the next operation that needs it. The OP's example would read like this in RPN:

4 4 * 4 4 * + 4 + 4 4 * -

HP makes calculators that work like this, and once you got used to it, it's much more flexible!

(4x4)+(4x4)+4-(4x4)=

(16)+(16)+4-(16)=

32+4-16=20
