Oh, I see now. People love to hate secret societies... For good reason. Though a more apt term may be 'cult' especially when centered around a particular personality or charismatic individual. They also attract the power-hungry. To explore life's mysteries it isn't necessary to join anything. Access to 'secrets' is often a pretense, a lure.
