Whiplash - help needed
Dear GLP,

We're desperate. 2 years ago, my girlfriend and I were involved in a car crash. We got hit in the back by a mini-van driving about 20mph, I got away fine but my girlfriend has been suffering from a heavy degree whiplash since then. She's currently in treatment by a chiropractor, a dude we pay about €80 for 10 minutes of back pushing and cracking, each and every time. I know recovering of this is a quite a process, and we sort of have to wait it out, but meanwhile we have to make the best of it. The pain / ache in her back seems to originate from the spine, and is present fulltime. The problem is, she's having episodes of extreme agony. Sometimes its gone after half an hour, sometimes it lasts for a day, today for example. Only thing I can do is try to work her back a little (I'm no physiotherapist or chiropractor, so I'm limited) or put some ice on it. The thing I'd like to ask here, is there any way to help her body recover, or at least ease the pain when its needed most? Any nutrients which are important in recovery process / pain reduction? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot hf

Having good posture really helps. So does traction, especially when sleeping.

I would alternate hot and cold packs. Sometimes heat helps more sometimes cold.

I would also buy an infrared massager. I have one and it works wonders.

Re: Whiplash - help needed
I had a whiplash injury that eventually resulted in surgery for a ruptured disk. If she is having any shooting pain when she moves in certain ways this is a possibility and will have to be treated by a doctor. I still have flare ups to this day so I have fine tuned my neck/back pain "system" if you will.

Try these things:

A good anti-inflammatory OTC drug such as Aleve (1st choice) or Advil (2nd choice). Take a big loading dose and then maintain. When I have an episode, I generally take 4 Aleve, then 2 each time. Advil does not work for me and a doctor explained that these drugs react to different receptors so one may work better for one person than an other. Try them both and see if one works better. FYI, Aleve & Advil both used to be RX medications in which ONE pill was 800mg and you were instructed to take one or two (800-1600mg). One of each tablet today is only 200mg.

Shower massage. Hot baths.

No sudden movements. Walk slowly and carefully. Get up from sitting gently, etc.

Lots of slow, gentle stretching and flexing arms, shoulders area. If this results in a shooting pain, stop. I can also find "knots" along my shoulder blades that I massage out. I think it is from my muscles tensing up to avoid that shooting pain.

Propping up in bed so that the spine is straight and not crooked or bent. Use pillows. Best way (for me) during an episode is on my back, propped up slightly on a few bed pillows with a smaller neck pillow to cradle my head and neck.

Don't let neck/shoulders get cold or be in a draft. Keep covered.

Once she's feeling better, she should still sleep with the spine straight, avoid jerky movements, other triggers, etc. Oh and keep that neck warm. Prevention is half the battle with this.

Hope this helps, it can be really awful, I know.
?Really?

Hi OP. Check out echo massager. Sorry, don't know how to post, but it relaxes the muscles and unpinches the nerves. For the price of a few chiropractor visits you can own your own machine and use it anytime. It has worked wonders for many people with chronic pain. Hope she feels better soon.hf

I've had pain for many years when I looked up with no relief anywhere not even chiropractors. Well long story short I changed chiropractors and now I have no pain when I look up.

All chiropractors are not equal. Try another one.

I've had good and I've had bad. If you find a good chiropractor, stick with him/her.

Re: Whiplash - help needed
physical therapy. There are several exercises that are used. Took me about 6 months to get back to close to normal.
Don't want to describe the exercises ... you may not interpret them correctly. A therapist should cost anymore than your chiro.

Re: Whiplash - help needed
The chiro is treating the wrong thing in part. Whiplash is often a muscle injury followed by muscles healing tight, or stuck in spasms. You need to treat the muscle issue. Stretching exercises, accupuncture, massage, exercise as possible. The muscles will stop pulling her back out of alignment once repaired correctly.

Re: Whiplash - help needed
I second physical therapy.
A physical therapist is more holistic than a chiropractor and will teach you how to stop causing further injury.
