Texas City Tx in citywide lock down
Shelter in place for Texas City residents
TEXAS CITY, TX (KTRK) -- Residents in Texas City are being asked to shelter in place because of a hydrochloric acid leak at the city's docks.

Texas City's emergency manager Bruce Clawson says there's been a hydrochloric acid leak from a tank in the port area. So far, no injuries were immediately reported.

However, that leak created a cloud that's now traveling over parts of the city, prompting officials to enforce a citywide lock down. Right now, ABC13's AccuWeather forecast shows winds in Texas City are blowing from the southeast at 15 miles per hour.

Shelter in place after hydrochloric acid leak in TC

TEXAS CITY — Emergency management officials issued a shelter in place order for the entire city after a late night hydrochloric acid leak near the Port of Texas City.

The leak appeared to be coming from the Dallas Group storage facility, Texas City Emergency Management Coordinator Bruce Clawson said.

Three people have been taken to Mainland Medical Center for treatment for exposure, Clawson said. One of the people taken was a dock worker and the other two firemen.

So...they don't want those living there to move away from the potentially dangerous acid fumes...?

Hey, anyone remember how less than a month ago BP sold off its oil refinery in Texas City, TX? I do. Linked in the assumptions thread.

I'm not surprised, but I hope the people stuck there do not come to too much harm.

Texas City...

Years ago I was reading a book called, "The Effects of Nuclear Weapons." It compared the results of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to an explosion that occurred in Texas City when a ship or two loaded with ammonium nitrate blew up.

Seems like they still haven't got the safety thing quite right. I hope this time no one gets killed.

Wow, that's crazy! When is the last time anyone has heard an actual 'shelter in place' alarm for a whole town? Scary!

Mapped it, think oh big deal, some small town 50 miles form anything... well it seems to be about 40 miles for Houston. But it seem to be somewhat isolated, but for sure not way out in country.

It's much too late if the cloud is traveling in the city. And the panic would add more people hurted. In this case, confinement is the best choice.

I see that now that looked up the city in wiki. Just looking at the map, it looks like a small place. Didn't realize at first a lot of it is a port.

Never really thought of some large scale industrial chemical leak before. And I live in Tacoma, WA. About 10 minutes from the 3rd largest international commercial port on the entire West coat. Oh shit! I just freaked myself out.

Re: Texas City Tx in citywide lock down
Hydrochloric acid is clear and colorless. Concentrated hydrochloric acid forms acidic mists. Both the mist and the solution have a corrosive effect on human tissue, with the potential to damage respiratory organs, eyes, skin, and intestines.

Upon mixing hydrochloric acid with common oxidizing chemicals, such as sodium hypochlorite (bleach) or potassium permanganate, the toxic gas chlorine is produced.

Like most chemicals, if something goes bad, it can be awful.

Are the surrounding cities within that area at any risk? Just relaxing on my balcony (located less than 20 miles North of Texas City in Clear Lake area) and wondering if that's such a good idea.
