Strange Weather Phenomenon Causes Carbon Monoxide Scare - PITTSBURGH
Weather anomaly causes carbon monoxide scare at Pittsburgh homes
Fire chief: Readings outside buildings as high or higher than inside

PITTSBURGH, OCTOBER 26,2012 —
When it gets cold outside, fire companies start getting calls about carbon monoxide -- but not typically on days like Thursday that are so mild they end up breaking temperature records.
However, beginning at 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, Pittsburgh fire crews started getting calls for active carbon monoxide alarms.
“It was actually kind of ironic that the inside detectors were alerting us to the fact that there was a problem outside,” said deputy fire chief Frank Large.
The activity continued several times throughout the day.
“The companies went out and used their gas detectors and determined in some cases there were significant cases of carbon monoxide in the air,” Large said. “They were finding, however, that the readings outside the buildings were as high or higher than what they were finding inside of the buildings.”
Local fire crews learned of a temperature inversion outside, a weather anomaly that capped the atmosphere and trapped carbon monoxide in pockets over the East End, Homewood, Point Breeze, Stanton Heights and Lawrenceville.
“We had readings as high as 20 to 25 parts per million, which can be a problem over a period of time if you’re exposed to those levels,” Large said

Re: Strange Weather Phenomenon Causes Carbon Monoxide Scare - PITTSBURGH
So, are they sure it was the temperature inversion that was causing this? I have heard about inversion layers, but not with this type end result. My question is why now and not during other inversion situations? I just find this interesting because I have never heard of this happening before. I have lived many places and knew a whole family that died from carbon monoxide. The teenage daughter had left her car running in the garage that was connected to the family room in the basement. Anyway, it killed everyone in the three story home including all the animals. They did not even have gas in the home, all electric.

My point is I wonder how much more can collect in the outside air, and if there is a way to figure it out before it is too late.

Re: Strange Weather Phenomenon Causes Carbon Monoxide Scare - PITTSBURGH
I am terrified of carbon monoxide. I have had something pretty scarey happen with it.
A few years ago I had lost my job and was unable to pay my gas bill so they of course come and turned my gas off. It was a large bill and I ended up leaving the gas off for around 2 years. I made due with space heaters. The gas furnace only has vents in the downstairs. I have no vents in the upstairs where we all sleep. After a couple years of the gas being off I decided to have it turned back on because of course the house is chilly when you are heating with space heaters. The gas people came and turned it on and it put off a very strange smell. They said the smell will go away in a few hours, it's because you haven't had gas on for a few years. The next day the smell was still there, I called they came back and they said, it's fine, it will go away. The next night my smoke detector went off. So I called the gas company again and told them the fumes are setting the fire alarms off. Gas company came around 1am and they tested for carbon monoxide. I had 345 parts per million in my basement and it was giving a 233 parts per million off at each vent. My husband and I woke the kids up and went to a hotel. We ended up having to stay almost 2 weeks at my parents before the house tested okay. We were all experiencing headaches, runny noses, and extreme tirdness during those 3 days. The gas company said if we would have had vents in the upstairs we would have died in our sleep.

I know this is a long story but when it comes to carbon monoxide, I don't think you can be too scared. By the way, I had my gas turned off that night. I refuse to use gas now.

I had a miscarriage once due to carbon monoxide poisoning from a furnace that was later condemned.

There are long term effects to carbon monoxide poisoning...and it doesn't take much.

The fact that there was sufficient CO OUTSIDE to set the detectors off INSIDE is pretty freaking scary. Those people are going to suffer the health effects of breathing this in for a long time to come....and they won't even know it.

Seriously though, if this is an atmospheric thing, we're in huge trouble. Imagine, entire towns could die in their sleep.

Mild CO poisoning, I believe, causes decreased mental functioning AND slight euphoria, kind of like a stiff drink...

That would be the desired effect if you wanted to "subdue" a large crowd that was enraged.

Is that so? Well, this Pittsburgher would like to know what city you live in (or close to) where the population is so far ahead of the bell curve that you're popping out geniuses at such a freakish rate.

In any case, we must be doing something right for a bunch of stupid people.

We didn't realize that the US was such a terrible place to live until the Sydney Morning Herald reported it this morning. According to the Economist's 2009 liveability survey, Pittsburgh is the most liveable city in the United States of America, ranked 29th in the world.
 Quoting: JJ

[link to www.gadling.com]

Pittsburgh has a really great cultural scene. We have a great ballet and a great symphony that travels the world and performs to packed houses....

Pittsburgh's strong university presence--the city has over a dozen colleges or campuses--helps bolster its livability.
 Quoting: JJ

[link to www.forbes.com]

It's official: Pittsburgh is best place to live in U.S. (it even beats Honolulu)

The survey ranks cities based on 30 factors such as healthcare, culture and environment, and education and personal safety.
 Quoting: JJ

[link to www.dailymail.co.uk]

Given that abundance of good publicity, the news that Pittsburgh once again is the most livable city in the United States -- and 29th worldwide -- in a 2009 survey by British magazine The Economist was "great news, but not a surprise," Mr. Onorato said.

The Economist's ranking is just one of many kudos Pittsburgh has earned recently: In 2007 it was rated as "America's Most Livable City" by Places Rated Almanac, and in January Forbes Magazine cited it as the sixth best city in "Ten Cities For Job Growth In 2009."

You're fortunate not to be dead sleeping in those levels of exposure the OSHA's former limit for carbon monoxide was 50 ppm as an 8-hour TWA. The ACGIH has a TLV-TWA of 50 ppm with a TLV-STEL of 400 ppm

400 ppm Short term exposure limit with an 8 hour limit on 50ppm.

You had far more than that!

You're very lucky man.
