The subway system is greater than just the island. It goes out 60 miles in every direction, most of it above ground. |

From Yahoo News Canada More than half of all gasoline service stations in the New York City area and New Jersey were shut because of depleted fuel supplies and power outages, frustrating attempts to restore normal life, industry officials said. Reports of long lines, dark stations and empty tanks circulated across the region. Some station owners were unable to pump fuel due to a lack of power, while others quickly ran their tanks dry because of increased demand and logistical problems in delivering fresh supplies. The lack of working gasoline stations is likely to compound travel problems in the region, with the New York City subway system down until at least Thursday and overland rail and bus services severely disrupted. An estimated 75 percent or more of the gas stations in New Jersey were closed either because they had no gasoline, no power or both, said Sal Risalvato, executive director of the N.J. Gasoline, Convenience, Automotive Association. His organization represents about 1,000 gasoline stations in N.J. “What I’m seeing is here’s a combination of problems. Power is at the root of it. That means gasoline that is already in inventory, already refined in those big tanks you see along the side of the turnpike, they can‘t get that gasoline into the delivery trucks without power,” said Risalvato. The refineries that remain out of commission, especially the giant gasoline-producing Phillips 66 Bayway refinery, are not at the root of the current supply shortage. It is mainly the result of trucks not able to pick up deliveries or make deliveries. The two east coast refineries that remained closed, include Phillip 66’s [PSX 47.4653 0.3053 (+0.65%) ] big Bayway refinery in Linden, N.J., and the Hess [HES 52.61 0.35 (+0.67%) ] refinery in Port Reading. East coast refineries, including four in the Delaware and Philadelphia area, account for about 6.5 percent of U.S. refining capacity. Besides the refineries, gasoline terminals in northern New Jersey remained closed due to power outages and flooding. |

The Port of New York and New Jersey comprises the waterways in the estuary of the New York-Newark metropolitan area with a port district encompassing an approximate area within a 25-mile (40 km) radius of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. The system of navigable waters along 650 miles (1,050 km) of shoreline in the vicinity of New York City and northeastern New Jersey is considered one the finest natural harbors in the world.[1] The port is by tonnage the third largest in the United States and the busiest on the East Coast.[2][3][4] In 2010, 4,811 ships entered the harbor carrying over 32.2 million metric tons of cargo valued at over $175 billion.[5] [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] With a major port closed...expect to see the ripple effect stretch across the nation. If shipping companies are forced to deliver their goods elsewhere, it will cost them more in fuel and that cost will be passed onto the consumer. |

Look at a Map of the Ports just on the NJ side. The Rail Lines come into the ports. If the ports and rail lines are damageed than the trains cannot come into the ports, therefore, other supplies like FOOD may not be able to make it in to be unloaded to Trucks and out for delivery. The reverse is also true, Ships cant dock, cant load trains that go back across the country. Look at Port Elizabeth and Perth Amboy specifically on this. That is what this thread is about. Thread: Supply Chain Disruptions from Sandy-PLEASE REPORT- NY, NJ, CT, PA, Understand the damage at the ports, etc. It effects the whole country. |

As mentioned, it took 36 hours for Hoboken to start panicking because they didn't have food from the Nat Guard. 20,000 people couldn't figure out how to handle things for more than 36 hours. |

Let's send them some positive vibes and pray they come up with some innovative ideas to bridge the gap till things get back to functional levels. Good people tend to pull together in tough times.
