GREAT, problem is, if they are donating via the red cross, probebly not going to see much help where truely needed.I like the IN KIND, donations, seems to be a donation of water or food is what is neede now

Possibly, however, I think there is a lot more scrutiny now with regard to dispersal of funds. I'm sure they will be audited. Plus Red Cross's presence seems pervasive and instrumental and like a well oiled machine. Now they are going to have to shift into preparation mode for the next storm.

The Weather Channel will match Red Cross Donations to 1 million. Bain Capital (Mitt's company) is a backer/owner of TWC.

Did not the Red Cross say that the donations they receive for any specific crisis (revealed after 911) can be witheld and used for other catastrophies and not necessarily for the one that the donations were sent in for?

Whatever, I know the board of directors continue to make their non taxable salary at a six figure amount, as they decide if the money would go to a better use at a future date, all the while padding their account with interest earning dollars.

Make merchandise of you - Treat you not as rational beings but as a bale of goods, or any other article of traffic. That is, they would endeavor to make money out of them, and regard them only as fitted to promote that object.

This thread is not about debating the merits of the Red Cross, its about people who have stepped up and helped. In fact, a lot of the donations in the first link I gave are going to the Mayor's fund of NYC.

Why dont they just "print up the money" like they're doing anyway with the market?

That is the problem....they give to Red Cross. You know that tv-Athon last night, the one Matt Laur (sp?) put on. There was Jimmy Fallon, Springsteen, Steven Tyler, Billy Joel, Jon Bon Jovi, Jon Stewert, Christina Algularia, ect.....they all make over 20-25M a year each. They could afford to write off 1M in a donation, just 5 could help with a total of 5M. Instead, they sang a song. Then, begged $10 text donations from the public to Red Cross. Am I missing something with "why" they can't do more? And, why can't one celeb, stand up, knowing full well those Red Cross funds are not fairly distributed. One celeb could donate a 1M in supplies and have them shipped to those in need. And, they can still write if off. Damn greed.

I really love hearing about the generosity of others during and after an emergency like this. Just another example of how ppl can come together for a common good

I usually don't give too much kudos when the big businesses donate only because of the lobbyists, the campaign dollars they donate, the political favors they receive, and also cuz of the millions of dollars they get in kickbacks from govt subsidies.

The individual donations are what make me smile....usually restores my faith in humanity. They give because they WANT to.....not because they know they'll benefit from it down the road

So a HUGE 'thumbs up' for the musicians & tv personalities you listed.....very nice!!
