The elusive marine mammal is the spade-toothed beaked whale (Mesoplodon traversii). The good news is that it was seen at all, revealing that it still exists. The bad news is that the sighting was of a mother and her male calf, both of which became stranded and died on the beach. [link to news.discovery.com] WTH? read further-The discovery actually happened two years ago, when the whales live-stranded and died on Opape Beach, New Zealand. It's only after DNA analysis that the identification of the rare species was made. At first, they were incorrectly identified as being the much more common Gray's beaked whales. "When these specimens came to our lab, we extracted the DNA as we usually do for samples like these, and we were very surprised to find that they were spade-toothed beaked whales," Constantine said. "We ran the samples a few times to make sure before we told everyone."- 2 years to run DNA? I want this job!!!.lol. Last Edited by AKObserver on 11/05/2012 02:33 PM |

Quoting: AwakeInTassie For a third successive day, locals have discovered distressed animals beached on the islands northwest of Tasmania. On Friday, 13 dolphins were found beached at Quarantine Bay on King Island, with eight able to be saved. But the find was dwarfed on Saturday when 60 pilot whales and 20 bottlenose dolphins were found on nearby New Year Island. [link to www.japantimes.co.jp] Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012 DARK SIDE OF THE RISING SUN Angry mobster looms large over politicians In Japan these days, the political world seems to be mirroring "Beat" Takeshi Kitano's latest yakuza film, "Outrage Beyond," which depicts Japan's ruling party as being well and truly in bed with the mob. If you've been paying attention to the news lately, that will sound familiar. Truth may be stranger than fiction, but sometimes fiction tells the truth first. The yakuza boss turns the tables and threatens that, if provoked, the Sanno-kai will cut ties with the minister and expose their cozy relationship. He wins the argument. Japan minister ‘falls ill’ amid quit calls over Yakuza links November 05, 2012 TOKYO Japan’s justice minister, who was appointed just 18 days ago, is set to resign, media said on Friday, after he admitted having had links with organised crime. Keishu Tanaka was brought into the cabinet less than three weeks ago as part of a reshuffle aimed at shoring up Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda’s shaky administration. But he was forced to admit a yakuza connection after a tabloid magazine revealed he had once acted as matchmaker for a senior mobster. [link to www.omantribune.com] Yakuza under siege from new zone laws The Australian October 31, 2012 JAPAN'S mafia - already in turmoil because of strict new local laws - now face the prospect of arrest for even minor offences under new nationwide anti-mob legislation. The laws came into force yesterday against a backdrop of ongoing violence from members of some yakuza syndicates and embarrassing headlines after a minister in the national government was linked to a leading crime group. The laws give police across Japan the power to declare areas frequented by yakuza as special zones where gang members' freedom of movement and activities will be strictly regulated. Yakuza members can be arrested for illegal assembly, making threats or interfering with civilians under the laws within these zones. The long-finned pilot whale is the last surviving animal from a pod of 44 whales and 38 dolphins found beached at New Year Island off the state's north-west on Saturday. The day before, 13 bottlenose dolphins were stranded at Quarantine Bay on nearby King Island. A total of 23 animals have been returned to the water by wildlife experts and locals from both islands.
