Very tight pressure gradient right over Jersey on latest NAM.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see hurricane force winds.

Got a small quake 5 hrs ago.

5 km deep.

Was felt in a number of towns in New Jersey.

IMHO, this was caused by the rebounding of the NAM plate from Sandy's pressure drop.

Region is now unstable.

Nor'easter due mid-week will cause a sudden pressure drop in the area again and could set off a big quake within the next two weeks.

Stay tuned.

Low pressure centers (Hurricanes) and earthquakes go hand in hand. Expect some more movement in Alaska soon too.

Re: QUAKE WATCH: NJ & NYC Area. Small quake indicates instability from Sandy. Nor'easter could trigger larger quake
EARTHQUAKE SUMMARY FOR NOVEMBER 5, 2012

The most unusual earthquake of the day occurred in New Jersey at the site of the landfall of hurricane Sandy last week.

This further illustrates the relation between strong storms and subsequent earthquakes.

NEIC reported that this earthquake of M 2.0 was felt with intensity in Connecticut at: (2) Norwalk, in Delaware at (2) Newark, in Massachusetts at (3) Leominster, in New Jersey at (2) Bloomingdale, (2) Haskell, (1) Hawthorne, (3) Highland Park, (2) Mahwah, (1) Medford, (3) Oakland, (3) Ringwood, (1) Somerset, (3) Wanaque, in New York at (2) Brooklyn, (2) Hillburn, (2) New York, (3) Queensbury, (2) Sloatsburg, in Pennsylvania at (2) Conshohocken, (2) Gilbertsville, (2) Glen Mills, (2) Kennett Square, (2) Ashburn, (2) Midlothian.

No damages or casualties were reported with this earthquake.

The earthquake was accompanied by a loud boom heard clearly in Ringwood, New Jersey.

Ringwood suffered considerable damage from the landfall of Hurricane Sandy including power outages and downed trees.

While earthquakes have occurred in conjunction with strong weather in the past, this is one of the first to be located at the exact site of landfall.

Very shallow 5.2 Quake south of Oz.

[link to quakes.globalincidentmap.com]

[link to earthquake.usgs.gov]

Antipode is along the New England Coast.

[link to www.antipodemap.com]

Surface L-waves will reinforce around the antipode.

This, along with the low pressure from the nor'easter, could trigger a quake.

Stay tuned for updates.
