With the cold weather and people heating their apartments with their ovens, this could get out of hand quickly

bump bump and 5 stars (and thanks) for reporting on this. Miggy had a thread about this possibility yesterday; considering the difficulty they are having just getting food and water to these people it would seem likely that it would be nearly impossible to get fire trucks into some of the areas. And with colder weather and another storm on the horizon, this scenario (as well as people dying from carbon monoxide) may become far too frequent.

I just happened to see a brief mention of this situation on FOX, one building has been basically engulfed and the fire has spread to a next-door building. One Firefighter has been carried away on a stretcher. No reports on the cause as yet, but I'd guess that your suspicions about candles and people trying to stay warm may be confirmed.

Eggcellent, you are so right. This saddens me immensely. I thought they wouldn't start until later today, though.

Did you watch that clip about David Wilkerson's prediction?

He was adamant about voicing it about three years ago and I fear he was talking about this very thing.

I miss seeing you around, dear friend.hf

Doesn't take much for something to fall in to it if the door is open. Now imagine a whole apartment building full of open ovens. Add candles for light this evening, and this could get out of hand fast.

"fall" into an oven?

An oven is safer than a wood stove.

Putting a large pot of water in the oven will put moister in the air and make it seem a lot warmer.

Any iron pans you have could be in there holding the heat, which will make it less expensive to run the oven, as well as the hot water, and also there is your hot water for dish washing etc.

I only run the oven full time at a 200 degrees. Turning it up seems to make no difference. You can only get so much heat out of an oven and that is it. Putting pots of hot water on the top burners could drive the heat up, but i never did that because of children or animals in the house. Although i have used the top burners of a gas store for light to light up the kitchen, while i was right there watching it to cook and do the dishes etc.

At night be sure to close the oven door, but first take out the water, as it could go dry and ruin the pot you had the water in. Donot go above 200 at night.

Also thereis no wasted heat going up the cimney, so you get it all.

During the day, i leave the oven door on the catch: that is where the door is caught partially open. That way the stove holds heat, and acts as a radiator. The kitties like to gather around it.

Just keep all paper etc. away from the stove, and itis safe as any wood/coal stove, propane space heater, kerosene burner (actually safer than kerosene). The oven is even safer than an electric space heater.
The oven has been around since the beginning of man.

In a gas stove, i never set it below 200, for fear the flame could go out.

Here is a thought for you: I have a gas stove/oven. Even if the gas is OK, the oven has an ELECTRIC turn-on switch, so it is useless in a power outage. However, the burners on the stovetop can be lit by hand, so I can still provide a bit of heat, cook, and boil water for soup, tea/coffee, washing, etc. I'd need to tear the stove apart in order to get to the pilot light for hand-starting the oven.

So, how many people in the affected area have a gas stove (either natural gas or propane)? Their ovens are non-functioning (because of the electric switch to light it) so they will be utilizing the burners (maybe all 4 at once) for heat, cooking, etc. What do you think the odds are that there will be a piece of paper towel or an oven mitt which could be left too close or accidentally jostled over into the fire? All it would take is a moment of inattention (especially if there are kids there) and a tragedy could occur. Multiply that by an apartment building where you have absolutely NO control over what your NEIGHBORS are doing (no matter how careful YOU may be) and it's a recipe for disaster.

And it's doubtful that these people own the good old-fashioned oil lamps like we do out in the country, so there will be candles burning in the other rooms for light. Candles are easily knocked over by a child or even a pet, and can start a fire too.

I think these scenarios are what was giving Miggy nightmares.

Unfortunately, I live in Oregon so I doubt that anyone from NYC/NJ will be making it all the way here.

However, it sounds like TPTB have something cooked up for those of us on the West Coast as far as earthquakes and tsunamis, so I'll be able to make an offer of shelter and food for displaced people on THIS side of the continent (assuming that my home survives the earthquakes!).
