Hi ! Its ok when single but not with family, you need the mini van by then..
 Quoting: APOLLO ILLUMINIST

True, you need a grocery-getter and something to haul the grubs around if you have a family.

I don't have family, so it's been good for me, especially financially. Even if I did have kids, they'd become well-acquainted with walking and riding a bike, or public transportation.

I feel like my health is better for it too, it's helped keep me slim.
 Quoting: !saac

I like the best part in public trasportation is the better cruising...

As in rubbing your privates on other peoples bums... leg and leg rubbing while pretending to be asleep... mmmmmmmmm... public transport! what a "loser" transport!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27045246

The bus is always a great experience in my area, never a dull moment, lol. I always get to have the most interesting conversations with people on the bus. There's always an ear to bend, or a story to be heard, a friend to be made etc.

It's dirty, it smells, the people are oddly shaped and I love every minute of it.

That is great if you have a safe place for them to walk and ride a bike. And most places don't have public transportation. Especially reliable/safe public transportation.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1550123

Very true. People around here have really pushed it as a mode of transportation over the years, so we have bike lanes, lots of bike shops, plus mountain biking trails all over.

Definitely a bike friendly town here, but it took a while, pissed a lot of people off. We even had a local firefighter freak out and shoot a guy on his bike, while the guy was riding around with his kid on the bike.

Reliable and safe ?

I've never seen a public bus crash, and I've never seen more then loud mouths on the bus, which is a rarity in itself.

It was the same when I lived in DC too.

Idk, works for me 1dunno1

Asheville, couple blocks away from a bus stop, 10 minutes to town or grocery store, I can walk it under 20.
 Quoting: !saac

It is very pretty around there. That would be a nice place to raise a family.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1550123

Asheville is a hoot. It's a very interesting blend of counter-culture with conservative bible beltness, but it's been a very successful model from what I've seen. Been here for about 18 years and the whole time it's been a hot area to move to. People pour money into this town like it's going out of style, but it's very oriented towards small businesses and families.

I'm always amused to hear people on GLP saying it's " Demonic ".

I live about a block away from the Grove Park Inn, it's very scenic here, especially in the fall.

I live in a rural area so a vehicle is a must. Walking 20 miles to work or biking in -5 degree weather isn't my idea of fun. My children wouldn't like it either.

Haha, tell 'em about how you had to walk uphill to school in the snow wearing newspaper shoes. Toughen those little punks up.

No, seriously though, I know what you mean, I've lived a fair bit in the country too. Can't ride the Kubota into town, lol.

Re: What's your alternative mode of transportation ?
I recently totaled my car and have to rely on a bicycle for the time being. I'm finally losing some weight and getting into shape.

And an unexpected bonus to all this is: I'm amazed at how much money I am now saving!

I'm saving the direct costs of owning a car. Gasoline, insurance, car repairs, taxes, etc.

But I'm also saving additional money. I now no longer impulse buy. Because its now more trouble and time-consuming to spend money than its worth. With a car, its too easy to hop in it on a whim and go to restaurants or the mall and end up spending $30-$100 on stuff I didn't realize I needed.

Now, I only go to a store when I absolutely need to. I have $400 extra cash per month now. Totally unexpected and very pleasantly surprised to have this much additional dough.

I'm seriously questioning ever getting a car again. I never realized its something I do not absolutely need and can live comfortably without.

Man, everybody I know is constantly bitchin' and moanin' about having to pay for this, pay for that, broken water pump, price of gas, etc.

I really don't knock it if that's what people want, but it's saved me some serious cash over the years, plus headaches, etc.
 Quoting: !saac

totally agree. one of the straws that broke the camels back for me was the ungodly amount of time and effort it took me to get a measly 200 bucks from my insurance company to fix my bumper after paying them who knows how many thousands of dollars. being treated like some kinda criminal trying to scam them out of money. also gas prices were sky high an i was feeling like a hypocrite nancying on against the war in iraq. the final blow tho..

(stupid story incoming) i pissed off a very drunk girl at a party that was quickly getting out of control... i left before the shit could hit the fan, she called in my car for a hit an run accident. my car (with a fucked up front bumper, was wrestling with aforementioned insurance company) sure looked like it had been in an accident.. long story short, they were in my driveway when i got home and beat the shit out of me and charged me w/ a DUI and a suspected hit and run. blah blah blah, lost my license, court, fees, probation, total nightmare, blahblahblah...

skip ahead 6 months.. i was walking to work a few days before getting my license reinstated, damn near killed by an asshole in a hummer with a "WWJD?" bumper sticker

and i thought to myself he'd prolly be WALKING or riding a donkey, but certainly not running pedestrians off the road in a fuckin hummer. i'm not one who is a hardcore christian or someone who is always "looking for signs" or anything, but i decided then for sure that i was done w/ the whole routine and have not looked back.

I make nearly $80K a year and haven't owned a car in 14 years.

Hell, I recently had to go back and do another road test because my license had been expired for so long and I figured I might want to rent a car, join ZipCars, etc. at some point.

Yeah, I'm a real "loser" without a car. I live in a city and walk to work, and ride transit or bike anywhere else. I'm such a loser that I have a couple hundred grand in investments since I have so much disposible income, and instead of a car I have a stash of gold and silver.

I don't even know why I have a car I only use it less than 2 hours a day. I would get rid of it tomorrow if I didn't need the ride around town and all the hauling I do. If I didn't need to leave the house I would just put an ad in the paper tomorrow. I probably average what, maybe 12000 miles a year...I think if I started training I could easily jog that in a year....thanks for the inspiration O.P
