I have Eczema on the side of my thumb and sometimes my chin (computer use related my hand ouches my face} specifically contact dermatitis meaning it is n allergic reaction to soap or something else I contact. My doctor prescribed dexamethasone which can cause amongst a long list of adverse effects “Psychic derangements may appear when corticosteroids are used, ranging from euphoria, insomnia, mood swings, personality changes, and severe depression, to frank psychotic manifestations. Also, existing emotional instability or psychotic tendencies may be aggravated by corticosteroids” Upon review of all the adverse effects compared to few benefits I opted for a more natural approach I discovered on my own that oil of oregano was the only solution for the itch. To combat the skin thickening and cracking coconut oil and a bandage worked wonders I never used the dexamethasone as there was nothing to indicate that this drug was in my best interest. It's fine for most people for short term use. I have regularly taken doses of 80 mg to 30 mg a day for months at a time. The side effects have been bad, but I had to pick the lesser of two evils. |

My 11 yr old son was given this drug about 3 weeks ago for asthmatic bronchitis. He has never before had asthma and was prescribed 60 mg a day. At one point he was told to double his dose...40mg at a time. After 8 days of this medication we were told to stop it abruptly. He was showing signs of arthritic pains and 'moon face'. His joints all ached and popped. He also had a very bad migraine, itching, and terrible abdominal cramping. After numerous trips to both the ER and Physicians office we were told it was post-viral arthritis, heartburn, constipation, etc. etc. I still believe that all of his side effects were due to this medication. He missed almost 3 weeks of school. |

I fail to understand cloistering round the lesser of two evils when it comes to big Pharma medications and although I do not advocate alternative methods for dealing with sinus infections as this is a personal growth issue I can state that colloidal silver has worked wonders for us. Additionally we drink a tea made from olive leaf mixed with other herbs that has kept us cold, flu and other infections free for many years. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 19011623 United States 11/12/2012 11:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I am so very sorry, OP. (((hugs))) I was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue along with some hormonal issues. When I finally got someone to listen and figure out what was wrong with me (after 10 years of being told I was fine) I was at the point I didn't want to live like that any more. I would have rather died than have to live 30, 40, 50 more years like that. I was 30. And my situation was gradual. I can imagine that s sudden issue like this due to steroid withdrawal would be so much ore extreme and I can understand how he got to that point. Again, I am so very sorry, but thank you so much for spreading the word. I was pressured by a bunch of people last week to take my 6 year old to the dr. For a steroid shot for hives. I know one shot is a different story, t I'm still glad I followed my instinct and let his odyssey handle it itself. |

If I had not experienced it, and (though too late) researched it, I would have not known what it was. Many are cut off cold turkey, and then, when the patient is ill, the physicians try to state it's something else. Steroid withdrawal is not familiar with many drs, as well, they are very uneducated about it. I hope your son made a full recovery |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 27087823 Canada 11/12/2012 11:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Prednisone is similar to cortisol, a hormone naturally made by your adrenal glands. If you take prednisone for more than a few weeks, your adrenal glands decrease cortisol production. A gradual reduction in prednisone dosage gives your adrenal glands time to resume their normal function. You cannot abruptly stop taking the drug or taper off too quickly. Your son should never have been "cut cold turkey!" OP, I am sorry about the lost of your son and my heart goes out to you and your family. You may have a lawsuit on your hands and want to contact a lawyer who is specializing in Medical Malpractice cases. Look for an attorney who'll work on contingency fees.
