I'm sorry you feel that way mate, I've always thought that you judge how good a countries society is by how it treats its old,infirm and vulnerable...if giving them enough help to better themselves or get well and not turn them away because they don't have means is socialism then I guess I must be a socialist. Free health care, free basic education, workers' rights (decent maternal leave, limited work hours, minimum wage,...) and welfare are essential to a civilized society.

What purpose does a society have if it doesn't take care of its sick, weak and vulnerable? Society is all about having a safety net and sharing skills. If the only functions of a society are supposed to be the protection of property, liberty, and peace, we might as well go back to living in small tribes or families.

Sure there are people who are going to abuse the system and waste my money that would be better spent somewhere else, but so what? That's not a reason to deny the societal safety net from the majority of people who really need help. Charity is not going to cut it, because people are fundamentally selfish. Furthermore, getting help would depend on irrelevant matters like your appearance, ability to present yourself, and who you know. That's not right.
