One of these 'magnificent' creatures killed a man on Mt. Ellinor last year in Olympic NP.

It's best to admire them from a distance.

Those are not mountain goats--they're a species of mountain SHEEP from China/Russia.

Some of the awesome features of Goats

- they have a tendon in their hooves that acts like a suction cup. When climbing the rocks they can suction to them for added traction.
- They are a creature of habbit, you can set your watch to them litterally. If you know at 4 oclock they go to a specific spring or water hole they'll go there every day at that exact time give or take a minute.
- They are masters of water preservation, they litterally use every ounce they drink for good use in the winter. They eat snow in winter to get the water they need to process the lichens they eat. This goes against everything we know, if we are surviving in winter eating snow will kill you. It uses up valuable energy to turn snow into water.
- Goats can travel a 100 miles to breed each year. They have breeding areas that all the goats go to to have a big old breeding party. Once the shows over they all return home to their mountain they choose to live on. Most Goats have to travel through valleys and bush to get to their Mating area. Quite risky considering thats where the Grizzlys and wolf are.
- Goats traditionally go up into the rocks when scared or concerned by a predator. On the Stikine River in British Columbia, Goats live in the Stikine Canyons on the lower end and go down when threatened.
- Goats can climb vertical walls that seem impossible, they hop from crack to crack and can go straight up or at really sharp angles. Its rather amazing to watch!

Love watching the mountain goats and big horn sheep in the Banff/Jasper area.

Mountain goats are really a form of antelope and big horns are descended from sheep.
