At $40 a pop, it's a good deal. Agree, they could have left the start button on the desktop. Stardock has a desktop start menu add-on for $5. Sure, on an older computer its faster, but in reality its not, Windows 8 uses a cache system on shutdown to make its next startup faster, essentially when you shut off the computer it never really goes "off" its a very very energy efficient hibernation. problem with this is if that cache was damaged or you lost power then you won't benefit from that and so Win8 loads no faster than 7, on top of that if your hardware is capable then Win7 can load just as fast as Win8 on the same hardware, there are limitations to this. Even performance wise, Win8 is on par with 7, i use my desktop mainly for games, with an i7 and 2 GTX 560 Ti's performance is all, when i got a copy of Win8 i installed it on a small SSD drive i use as portable media... load time was no different than 7, tried a few games, frame rate was no different than 7. But i'm not bad mouthing Windows 8, just performance and gaming wise i would stick with 7, i would gladely use 8 on mobile platforms like Laptops/ultrabooks/netbooks, or even theater PC's the metro UI makes a great Theater and mobile layout. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24130738 VERY steep learning curve coming from XP. But I'm finding that all the control panel and tweaky stuff seems to be there. But I don't have to mess with it at all! I turned it on and it connected to my wifi without having to go into all sorts of menus. I don't feel like I have to manage anything. It just works. And I have yet to see a "Contact your administrator to fix this problem" message. And I have the choice to use Tiles or a more traditional desktop as the main working area. Pretty cool. I'm growing to like it very much. You are the same kind of person that expects a car to do everything for you...including drive itself. Many people don't like not knowing and being able to work with what is going on BEHIND "the curtain". They don't want uncontrolled things going on behind the scenes without their knowledge. You have a lot in common with these people as well......... |

I was very hesitant towards switching to windows 8 and initially hated it until I gave it a chance. It's microsoft's experiment to make. We shall see how it plays out for them. It could go either way, methinks. Either people will embrace the new start bar or they won't. |

I'd be willing to wager money that this will be another Vista or Win98ME......OR.....MS will patch the hell out of it to make it look and run like Win7 to save their asses. |

Were the Earth less harsh or the circumstances of life less austere, man would destroy himself before the shrine of the languid goddess. Only Real Men can with safety destroy the tangled forests and wilderness of Earth and make from them gardens, but will those who inherit the gardens be Real Men? The law decrees that they must be, or the wilderness will reclaim its own.” |
