Laser from plane scanning queens ny last night
My son came home at 3 am this morning. He told me that while he was walking home from the subway a plane of some sort was fling over head he looked up at it and saw that it had a green light on the bottom of the plane from which a green laser scanned across a large area of ground and passed over him as well,a gas station attendent saw the same thing as him and tried to hide from it.He stayed out side for awhile and the plane continued ot fly over the area scanning.Did anyone else happen to see this or does anyone know what this could be about?

sounds scary

but i wouldn't be surprised. lasers have been used to map forests, the laser can even penetrate the trees to see things

probably just a spotlight. Lasers have a pretty tight light, don't cover a lot of area.

possibly, but that doesn't account for the "scan" description

though i would agree covert scanning would be better off done with an invisible laser

May have been one of these.

You can buy attachments that shape the beam and one of them is a scan line. I've got the 750 mW unit myself and you can see it for miles, actually outer space...

You paid $1000 for a 750mW wickedlaser? Fuck man, you can get a 1w for cheaper on different sites such as o-like.
whatever

Re: Laser from plane scanning queens ny last night
Cheap green lasers can be purchased online for ~30$ which would be visible on the ground from a plane, and vice-versa. Precisely why you dont point at aircraft.

Given the distance to the viewer on the ground, it would be difficult to distinguish the exact positioning / point of emission ie window, or bottom of the craft.

To the poster above me ^^ 1,000$ is a common price for a class 4 DPSS 532, given that the laser is rated at 750mW stable and not just the peak. WL is notorious for fudging numbers...

Depending on the distance, and divergence (with or without beam expander) 750mW being shone at anybodies face would be pretty dumb. A class 4 can cause eye damage to unprotected eyes over a great distance. Had it have been a common class 4 blue 445nm, you get into the 'blue light hazard' as well.

As for seeing it from space, doubt it.. I have seen it done with the ISS, but from a dark location and with a stable 1W+ 445nm.

They may see a faint flicker but no beam is going to appear to them.

Wickedlasers sales propaganda is full of BS, do some reading and avoid those scamming morons.

I dont have many more details about this but no it wasnt a little laser pen the green laser covered over more than a block of homes. Thanks for your help, just thought someone from nyc might have seen the same thing.P.S to the OP from the united kingdom who called me a dumd fuck that wasnt very nice of you,how would you like it if I was to say England is a fag country,or do you people still lean on those skinny umberellas and pick hankies out of your sleeves that wouldnt be very nice of me would it?

could we work some assumptions depending on the make, angle & height of the craft at the time?

obviously certain planes simply have no windows pointing the to ground unless the plane is landing or banking right?

Wouldnt really matter, its entirely possible and have read of people doing this.

The initial beam is tiny, averaging 2-3mm collimated to parallel. To get the angle would simply require the operator of said laser to be holding it at the top of a small window aiming down, keeping it as close the bottom edge of the frame as possible.

As the beam covers distance and diverges, it becomes quite large. The ground viewer would not see a small dot, rather a large area being covered.

To assume anything related to the plane other than height would pointless.

Saying they were 'scanning', as in rendering an image, is unlikely. Either the OP is exaggerating, or the person who saw it was.

Military uses IR systems, not visible wavelengths for one. Camera systems, guidance, all infrared. Even the small survey systems they use to scan a crime scene or construction site are IR. Using visible wavelengths means that they cant filter out the noise given off by street lights, cars, houses, and during a day operation, DAYLIGHT..

For further assumption, lets refer to Occam's razor tounge

This technology involves a scanning and ranging laser system that produces pinpoint accurate, high-resolution, topographic maps. The original technology has been in existence for 20-30 years, but the commercial applications for LiDAR generated topographic maps have only developed within the last decade. Today the entire process of airborne laser mapping is highly automated from flight planning, to data acquisition, to the generation of digital terrain models.
