The results come from chemical analysis of a soil sample, so there are limits to what they could have found. I really hope it's complex organic molecules, of a type that aren't known in meteorites, and which therefore indicate life (probably - there will always be a caveat until something trundles up and eats the rover).

For people who can't see the interest in life being discovered on another planet unless it's technologically advanced or has big teeth... the implications for our understanding of the universe would be immense. If it's DNA-based, then we're probably looking at Panspermia being real; if not, it means we need to rethink (again) the range of possible pathways for life to get going. The latter scenario is much more exciting.

(Actually, what I really hope is that they've found something that looks like a living spore, blown from those 'forests' of 'spiders' around the south pole... but that sort of thing is still sci-fi at the moment, alas. It does make my eyebrow twitch that they've not sent a rover down there yet...)

My guess is some form of life, or signs thereof (e.g., methane). Won't be a surprise to most of us, but even microbial life would shake things up for a fair percentage of the world.
