Can you convince him go to AA meetings? They deal with drugs as well as alcohol, and are open minded and listen to all your worries and problems without judgement

unfortunately, most people addicted to crack have to lose everything and hit rock bottom before they will give it up. Just don't enable him in anyway.

Tell the crackhead their shit's impure. Been stomped on.

Drug problems are often to do with their entire circle of 'friends'. Get them into other circles, like going to church.

Re: I know someone addicted to crack..How can this person get away from it? How do I help?
Get them addicted to something BETTER that isn't bad for them. And it doesn't have to be a drug, food, etc. It could be an activity (skydiving, mountain biking, something that gets the adrenaline going), or traveling somewhere really exotic that will blow their senses away. Again, you're looking for something that will give them a "high" to REPLACE the high that crack gives them. It's not the crack a person's addicted to, it's the high that it gives the nervous system.
Apollo astronauts couldn't have passed through Van Allen's Belt. Van Allen wore suspenders.

After engaging in this new activity (or whatever) for a period of time, the addiction to crack will subside.

Re: I know someone addicted to crack..How can this person get away from it? How do I help?
Varied answers, many solutions to the unaware, yet the truth is the person simply must stop. Its that easy.

Finding the courage to do so is another thing entirely. To make it easier as another noted, it is dependent on people places and things, many a time a change of scenery will do the trick, but again its the persons choice as to weather or not they will go looking for it again.

Some say they must reach a bottom, yet any can look in the gutter and see many that even in the muck can not see the bottom, so this is no remedy.

others say church or a GOD, yet again the user must be receptive to something outside themselves, for it is a disease of self that afflicts them to begin with.

If one has the love, the compassion, and the strength to take on such a task of saving another from them self, one must find the things this individual hides from. Again you will find these things immersed in self, decisions, want, lack of something, yet all within the individual, and again demons only the individual can conquer.

I would suggest forgiveness as a key to the self. If this person can find that within for the thing he destroys, perhaps they will decide to stop destroying this thing.

okay, I've been here OP.
Tell them the truth, they're looking uglier and strung out, they're acting weird, bad breath, totally ruining their prospects, if you catch them sober tell them the truth, they're becoming uglier and strung out, they're acting weird, bad breath, totally ruining their prospects.

Promise you. If you're like brothers/sisters you might want to tell them you never want to see them embarrassing themselves so your not going to be their friend til they fix their attitude.

65/35 chance to get off the drug, no time specified, the person will do it when he/she is ready

that could be at any age..........all those years on drugs: wasted or stoned or high or whatever you wish to call it

Re: I know someone addicted to crack..How can this person get away from it? How do I help?
Find a less destructive substitute for the crack.

Then work from there.

I know a lot of smokers that took up sweets as a replacement for smoking.

Just need something else to occupy the mind until the urge passes.

Re: I know someone addicted to crack..How can this person get away from it? How do I help?
crack addiction is about self punishment. the actual physical withdrawal is only a couple of hours, so it isnt like a smack addict. until they get tired of beating themselves for their past "sins", it's just a cycle of self punishment, temporary clean up (usually with a "manic" edge to it), a setback that causes some minor depression, a binge, and then the cycle repeats. bipolarism is involved, self loathing is involved, and a need to reinforce the self loathing is involved. sure other addictions can break the cycle, whether it's jumping into the AA church, or adrenaline pumping sports, embracing a religion, etc. but, those often tend to be temporary fixes. socialization plays a big role too. one of the big problems with NA/AA format is the complete reliance on other addicts for social life. 30 guys reminiscing about their glory days on the pipe doesnt do much to dis-incentivize the habit. until they get done hating themselves, there really isnt shit you can do for them. turn him on to nitrous oxide, same buzz, way cheaper. get him to see a psychologist who actually gives a fuck. get him to forgive himself for his "great hidden sin" in his past. get him to quit hanging around with other crack heads. cut off his hands and lips.really the bipolarism and the self loathing is the root, and a long buried "reason" for the self loathing.

i take it you saw something you recognized... glad to offer up the "straight dope". it's a fucked up road your pal is walking, but the self forgiveness is the first REAL step off it. talk to him about what i said, get him to examine those peat bogs inside his head he hates to wade in, and convince him that no matter what that huge ugliness in the dim dark past is, slow self destruction isnt the solution.
