computer help: oem restore disk on non-oem pc???
I have a Compaq restore disk.
What happens if I use it on a
no name brand computer, which I know nothing about?
The no name pc is in need of major help and it looks like a format and fresh install is the ticket.
But the only win98 I have is on the restore disk.
Whaddyyathink?

You'll probably spend all that time installing it and when you get to the Serial #, no go..........

Copy Win98 Folder to hard drive C: after you format, then run Setup from Dos command line or Start-up floppy.

You can try it, but my guess is that the Compaq restore disk is going to look for a Compaq bios on the motherboard. If it doesn't find one, it won't work. Sometimes they are even model specific as well.

been there, done that
DOESN"T WORK!

Somehow the Compaq restore disk only recognises a compaq computer - probably thru the BIOS

you will need to dl all the hardware drivers, the drivers on the disk will not work with a noncompaq

44754's idea might work. It would be better if you have a burner on another PC. Burn the Win98 folder to a disc. But also there again, the other PC will probably have to be a Compaq. sigh
