As long as you aren't distributing it, uploading it or saving it to your harddrive you're not really breaking the law. The supreme court ruled the Hentai shit, the computer generated images of child porn are legal, and the stuff they alter, to make the girls look like little girls is legal.

I think there are a lot of good guys who keep all the illegal child porn of the internet, apparently they do a good job of it, I almost never see a picture of an underage girl and I have browsed a lot of porn sites.

Seems like it would be a monumental task though, since all those other countries have more liberal attitudes, I don't know if there's any laws restricting those countries from uploading underage girls.

this subject is a lot more complex than it appears. i know everyone wants to have a knee-jerk think-of-the-children reaction and that is normal. i don't think anyone here is supportive of child abuse but there are some disconcerting consequences for such serious action to be taken against someone whom has a particular arrangement of pixels or bits.

one poster basically asked `how do i even know what's ok or not? i can't verify ages myself..` and another responded along the lines of `if you aren't making/sending/saving it you're ok` but here's the thing - you may have already saved something without knowing it.

browsers will automatically save data into a cache which some users don't know to clear. there have been numerous incidents where ad companies get hacked and obscene material is uploaded and eventually displayed and saved on your system. when the ad sites have been hacked and the ads changed it gets noticed pretty quickly, especially if the images' differences stand out, but it's possible to put 1x1 pixel display images that are actually much larger and can't immediately be noticed.

there's also been a widespread issue of malware and viruses. millions of systems have been compromised and used for all sorts of things.

the internet is a place wherein one pokes around and receives data of unknown origin and credibility. much of it is not displayed yet exists. to have such strong punishments against particular arrangements of bits is threatening to a blind trusted based system like the internet. it starts on one very extreme thing in order to set up precedent and jurisdiction. next comes regulations like that stupid internet id card idea with your isps inspecting everything or everything is uniquely identified like internet 2 / ipv6. then something else is added to their list. and another. and another until there is no longer any freedom of expression. step out of line and you're busted to whatever degree they see fit.

pictures are a symptom, not the disease. the disease is a mental/spiritual virus perpetuated in cycles. these unfortunate people who do as have been done to them need therapy, or to be removed from society. i favor the latter as it would also remove a large portion of tptb.

computer files are just data. information. numbers. would you support making a number illegal? a series of alpha-numeric-picto-characters? should a particular arrangement of photons be illegal? should these photons also be held responsible?

Was he looking for child porn, or did he aimlessly run across it. Did he try to destroy stuff he thought was illegal? I think that makes a big difference. Absolutely go after people looking for child porn. Show some understanding to people who don't seek it out, but run across stuff anyway. Intent makes a difference.

I don't see how looking at a screen supports or victimizes anyone, no matter how disturbing the stuff on the screen may be.
