We didnt have much either back then. I have several buddies that were there with me and we meet up every year for 3 days and reminisce Cool. I still am in contact with two of the buddies from that time. What did you do as profession there BM? I was with the 49th company, in South Lebanon. My "war" rank was sargeant major, administrator. We did see some tense times with shells back and forth, but not as much as the first platoons that went there for peace keeping in 1979. They had it rough. As adminstrator I would go past the various posts in the field with an YP driver and a suitcase full of dollars. They called me 49 Money Maker back then, lol. Despite the war torn enviroment, it was a good time after all. I was a cavalry scout, the eyes and ears of the Army. I was an E5 sergeant leading border patrols from Chelcovika to kronoc ( north bavaria ) Some patrols were mounted jeeps or personnel carriers and some ( my fav) by foot. Watching the Russians watch us! Some time we would go on patrol with the West germans and drink beer while on patrol.  Thank you for your service and keeping us safe my friend. I too found the (sometimes nightly) patrols by foot the most exciting. And those locals were so extremely friendly and inviting. And you could buy everything in the stores and negotiate, buying a Citizen watch for 30 bucks and sell it in Tel Aviv on vacation for 700. Of course a lot of fake stuff, like "real" Adidas t-shirts with 4 stripes instead of 3, lol. I really miss the cheese and chocolate from you neck of the woods, the chocolate is out of this world. THe Germans would invite us into there houses while on patrol to feed us. The wall or the red light district in Nuremberg was something to see as well! I went to a concert Nuremberg once where it as 12 bands that played all da and all night. It was called the summer night fest. With all american bands, like Blue Oyster Cult, kansas, Styx, 38 Special and I cant remember them all. it was really fun times back then. |
