Anonymous Coward User ID: 28996332 United States 12/05/2012 04:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Quoting: BRIEF Ships take a long time to stop and manuever. Typically a 700 foot ship will take over a half mile to come to a comete stop once engines are put full astern. During this time the ship will also swing wildly and they won't be able to steer. I don't know anything about the North Sea but there may be shipping lanes that restrict the vessels to close quarters. If you have an inexperienced mate or pilot aboard they can get into a situation called the dance of death where both ships are making adjustments to avoid collisions at sea. If there is a language barrier between pilots they may not be able to communicate their intentions. You'll see the ship making a course change to port and you'll be swinging to port as well so you make an adjustment but since the ship responds so slowly you don't know the other ship is also making a correction so you keep zig zagging into each others way. If you are confined to a narrow channel there is no escape. This never happens in American waterways because pilots are required to all speak English and American deck officers are of the highest caliber but on many foreign ships the pilots are basically not fit to be an officer. Also on ocean going ships there is almost zero ship handling ability since the ship is operated via autopilot and even a 30 year captain may have never really driven the boat. They get to a port and a pilot from that country comes out and drives the ship in for them with a couple of tugboats to help. In the Great Lakes the ship captain is constantly piloting his ship on his own in confined waters. They are hands down the best ship pilots on earth. Ocean ship pilots are hugely inexperienced ship handlers and can find themselves in a bad situation very quickly since they mostly look at open water and just check a computer heading on occasion. |
