You may buy a firearm out of a newspaper from a private sale then sell it at a local store/dealer. This is what the mexicans do. Otherwise it takes a state ID (drivers license)
and background check only citizens can pass.

I don't see the need for guns. I carry pepper spray and have never even needed that.

You can rent one at a shooting range but you can't take it with you, At least in Texas you can do this,, just show them your passport, you might be able to buy a hunting rifle or shotgun at Walmart or someplace similar but a handgun will require registration.

The point isn't that he "needs" a gun. He wants to have the means of self protection apparently. Surprisingly you don't get to decide for what reason or why.
