I married a smokin hot woman, smart, and loving. Then divorced her because I thought she was cheating on me. Because she told me she was. Then find out later she lied to test me. Well we got divorced before I found that out.

Getting divorced was a Big mistake for me. I think. Who Knows.

Not leaving the mother of my kids(due to loyalty) to be with the girl I loved. I ended up losing them both.

I'm still not over it - 20 years later.

This is scary. Whenever I make a big decision I try to tell myself that in a year or two it won't even matter. But then I hear people say things like this and it reminds me that some decisions in life really stay with you, and require a lot of thought and meditation. Don't dwell on things tho, something tragic could have happened if it had worked out differently.

Making "mistakes" is how you learn and grow. I've made a lot of them, but I can't say I would wish they never happened.

Letting friendships slide as I settled down into married life with children.
 Quoting: ItzGeralyn

Yup, looking back on it I had a few friends I shouldn't have cut off contact with. Considering I moved away to a different state I guess growing apart is inevitable.

No... getting divorced was not your big mistake.

Getting MARRIED to a woman who would lie to you just to "test you"... THAT was your mistake.

NOT divorcing her would have been ANOTHER big mistake.

Women are INSANE.

getting a bullshit nearly worthless business degree in college instead of trying harder for something like engineering. i wish someone would have explained to me just how much more an engineering degree is worth over the course of my life than business management degree.

if you're a young college punk reading this, learn from my mistake.

Same here. I got business management degree but I learned too late what I want to do in life (not engineering).

Re: What Was Your One Big Mistake In Life?
Choosing to be born, if that is indeed how it works, or:

Getting my wisdom teeth removed. The painkillers I received exposed me to the "wonders" of drugs and resulted in a handful of drug addictions and completely wasted life over the next three years. By the time I emerged from the depths of addiction, I had absolutely nothing to show for the first 22 years of my life.

As for your mistake, OP, I would venture to say it's not a mistake at all. I understand many women play head games and "test" their men in ways and with justifications that are both seemingly devoid of all logic. They shouldn't do this, but they indeed do and most men who seek the companionship of a female will suffer through such things at some point.

What your wife did, however, goes far beyond the usual womanly wiles. If she was worth her salt (providing a woman who pulled this kind of shit could be) she would tell you she wasn't actually cheating WELL BEFORE the divorce got underway once she saw it was getting to that point.

I can't really think of any other reason she wouldn't unless she was just a really dumb (like IQ of a brick dumb) who operated off of pure emotion and emotion only. Or, maybe she wanted a divorce and wasn't strong enough to come out and demand one and get it rolling herself.

Either way, it sounds to me like divorce was for the best.

I have made a lot of mistakes. The first one was in 1984. Nothing you can do about that but live and learn.

Re: What Was Your One Big Mistake In Life?
My big mistake was not attending the prestigious college that accepted me to follow a guy. I went to a state university instead and never completed what I was capable of doing. Then I married him and divorced him 5 years later (no kids, thank god) having to shoulder nearly $20 grand of his debts so my credit wasn't ruined. I feel that the reason my life sucks now, is that I have no goal to strive for and that I wasted that one talent I was blessed with for some stupid guy. I want a do-over please!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27358318

Life is roll of the dice ... and if we THOUGHT out our big decisions when we were making them (versus making them emotionally) then there should be NO REGRETS ... since we made the best decision we could with the information we had at the time.

Chasing one's heart is NOT a bad decision when one is young, but it IS a roll of the dice. EVERYTHING though is a roll of the dice when one is young and somethings turn out well and others turn out like crap. It is how you bounce back from the crap that determines one's true character and attitude about life.

Many successful people (most actually) have NOT gone to a prestigious college but in any case "WHAT is success?". Is it money (imo NO), is it fame (imo NO), is it having power (imo NO), is it leading a heavily materialistic lifestyle (imo NO). Success is different for different people, but for me it is being a good parent under trying circumstances and treating people well.

Here's wishing you figure out what YOU think is really important in life, and then making concrete plans to obtain that.

Very insightful, thank you. This thread just happens to be happening during one of the biggest ruts-I can't even call it a rut, its a trench-of my life. How many times can someone drag themself out of a trench before they are too exhausted to do it one more time? I know I'm on the wrong path, but can't seem to find the right one and the deck is stacked against me at every turn. Don't get me wrong, I am thankful for my job, roof over my head, and almost enough to make ends meet but that's my entire existance at 38. My health is failing from cancer, and I have a family that distances themselves more by the day. No joy, only pain. No love, only solitude. No children, no husband. My dad always loved the quote from some silly movie "you're doin' it wrong!" and that's my life. I'm not trying to garner sympathy, just sharing that sometimes nothing pans out in the end and all that you thought you worked for was a mirage. Hopefully I will wake up soon and this will be a strange nightmare, ya know? hf

Re: What Was Your One Big Mistake In Life?

I believe you, Julie was smart. She wanted out dear heart, nobody "pretends" to be a cheater to see if their marriage will withstand the heat. She just wanted out and didn't want to be candid with you. You are too good for such nonsense. You have two choices. You find a nice woman, there are several more you may like other than Julie. Or you try to find Julie and see if she is available. She has probably grown up a lot and also believes she made a mistake too.
