In modern times, if you study economics, you know that we have entered a new era.

Food, water, and necessities are taken care of by a very small portion of the population.

So there really aren't that many necessary jobs.

So since everyone could have food and water... what do people strive for?

Status.

That is why rich people spend forty million dollars on a painting of red vomit or a million on a bra of diamonds.

They are buying a status symbol

Its that simple.

So if you want to make a lot of money... just create something vaguely nice and that can be displayed, and then charge a ridiculously large amount for it.

A rich person will buy it so they can use it as a status symbol.
