First animal you see in the morning!
Let's play animal totem. Start keeping track of the first animal you see after you wake up in the morning, and not your household pets. I mean the first animal you see when you step outside or look out the window. That's your animal totem for the day.

Then go to google and type the name of the animal and the word totem to find what it means for your. Come back and post your totem information.

I stepped out this morning into a white out blizzard, and the only animal I saw was a Northern Flicker under the tree looking for insects in the snow. I haven't seen one in about 20 years.

...........

The person who has the Northern Flicker Totem will be a quiet unconventionalist. They are generally laid back and unassuming. They don't have big ego's and big expectations. From this you would expect an individual that just went with the flow and did things as they have been done traditionally. But this couldn't be further from the truth. Northern Flicker Totems often do things in bizarre new ways. They think up new and unique things, the act in brave and bold new ways. But it's done so with a sense of calmness and gentleness that is usually counter to such bravado. The result is that others will often follow these new ways and ideas simply because there is no ego involved as a barrier to entry. They will be willful and confident, with clarity in all they are doing, but again not with arrogance, with calm. And they like to cut loose and have fun as well. It's a bit of a balance but they make it happen. They are great communicators and will often be the ones that mediate between two others in a heated argument. In relationships, Flicker Totems are quick to make attachments and prefer long term relationships. They will tend to want to share tasks and chores with their partner rather than having chores that are 'his' and chores that are 'hers'. In careers, Flicker Totems tend towards careers that are on the edge but where they can still be their calm selves. Conventional careers of fireman or accountant are completely out for them. Artist, Political Activist, Naturalist, and Environmentalist are all great career choices for a Flicker Totem. In addition careers involving mediation or arbitration are also good fits. Where these come together in one career are sheer perfection. 'Environmental Lawyer' is an example of this. As a final note, just because the Northern Flicker Totem is not full of ego, don't underestimate them.

I usually see a finch, cardinal, blue jay, chickadee or squirrels. Actually lately, a hawk has been hanging around as well.

I put out seed bags for the birds and a dog bowl of unsalted nuts for the squirrels (cardinals and blue jays snatch nuts out of it too).

Its almost sunrise here, first animal i saw outside was a butcher bird, dunno what that means but it was a chatty one!!!

[link to www.wildspeak.com]

The Australian magpie is not actually related to the more well-known magpie of the Northern Hemisphere. The Australian magpie is closely related to currawongs and butcherbirds. There are many subspecies of Australian magpie, though almost all have sexually dimorphic black and white plumage. The magpie is omnivorous, and will take hand outs from humans; they become semi-tame quite easily.

LOL I woke up to about a billion ants in my kitchen (went to bed without doing dishes last night) and your post made me think, could ant be a totem animal? Sure enough ... and with 12/21/2012 approaching it's a good one!

[link to www.mrkay.org]

Ant Medicine

Oh, my — the pesky ant. They get into our food, on our kitchen counters, in our sugar, and they find ways to get into places you would never think of — and some of them bite. What a pain! Hhmmmmmm.

Watch the ant closely. He is seldom alone, and you know there is a colony somewhere. He can carry many, many times his size in weight and, if he can't carry it, he will drag it or get help from another ant. If you put an obstacle in his path, he will study it for a minute and then either go over it, around it, or try to find a way to take it with him. You cannot stop them from their ultimate goal unless you kill them.

Ants are master designers and builders, and they never rest. They are always working, and they work together to complete a master project.

Look at the many lessons for humans here. Quiet determination to reach your goal, and the willingness to work hard and steadily to accomplish that goal. No false pride that says you have to do everything yourself, and alone. The ability to work in groups for the good of the whole. The great gift of patience which allows us to study our alternatives, and take one step at a time — always moving forward toward that goal.

Self discipline, group effort, and the ability to delegate are all part of ant medicine. Never giving up. Patience, patience and PATIENCE. Not falling for a fast and easy solution because, in your heart, you know there is no substitute for your own dedication to your goal, and your willingness to work to get there. Persistence — and the success that comes with persistence — are ant traits.

Also, if you carry ant medicine, the number 12 may be significant for you. Your successes may come at intervals of 12; 12 minutes, or 12 hours, or 12 days, etc. You may want to consult someone knowledgeable in numerology to understand your connection to the number 12.

Do you live in my apartment complex, LOL.

Surprisingly they can also be totems, even good ones.

Cockroach - Survival

The Cockroach teaches us how to use what we have available to us for survival. To clean out the dead and useless aspects of our lives. When the Cockroach appears as a totem,
our sensitivity to subtle changes will be magnified.
We will have the power to scurry out of danger.

People with this totem often find that they had an abbreviated childhood – a premature movement into adulthood, the necessity to take on early responsibility.

Although often seen as a disgusting animal, the Cockroach is actually a gifted teacher in the art of survival and successful adaptability, especially in environment that may seem a bit hostile.

Just now, as I stepped out into the snow covered landscape, while it's still dark out.. I didn't see any animals, but I can hear an owl.

Magic, Omens, Wisdom

The owl is the symbol of
the feminine, the moon and the night.
The owl is the bird of magic and darkness, of prophecy and wisdom.

The owl is associated with Athena.

An owl totem gives you the power to extract secrets.
Meditate on the owl and things will be revealed.
Listen to its voice inside of you.

You will hear not what is being said by others, but what is hidden.
You can detect subtleties of voice that others cannot.
People cannot deceive a person who has an owl totem.

Owl people can see into the darkness of others souls.
Most owl people are clairvoyant because of this ability.
It can be very scary at times.
Learn to trust your instincts about people.
Let your owl totem guide you.

Chief Running Elk had three sons...
One day the oldest son about 12 years old came into his father's teepee and asked, "father why am I called Flying Eagle"? The chief replied, "Son on the day you were born i was very proud and the first thing i saw when i looked out of my teepee was a flying eagle and so you are called, Flying Eagle"! Satisfied with his father's answer the boy ran off.
The next day the chief's second son about 7 years old came to him with the same question. "Father why am i called Dancing Bear"? "Son the chief replied, on the day you were born i was very happy and the first thing i saw when i looked out of my teepee was a dancing bear" "Therefore you are called Dancing Bear"! Satisfied with his father's answer the boy ran off.
The next day Chief Running Elk's third son about 4 years of age came to him and asked him..."Father, why am i called Pooping Dog"? "Son...

I hate squid! But even an animal you dislike can serve as a personal totem.

--------

Giant Squid - The Darkest Places

Keywords:

Overwhelming others, and being overwhelmed, taking people down into the darkest places inside themselves, true fear, terror that floods, a connection to the kraken and kraken mythologies, being unable to survive in 'the light,' clashing with sperm whale energy, plumbing the depths, feeling stranded or stuck from time to time.

General Description:

Giant squid are a series of species of squid that can reach lengths of up to thirteen metres. They travel by jet propulsion and controlling the intake and expulsion of water, though they also have fins that assist them. They have a very large eye which enables them to make use of the very little light and bioluminescent light available at great depths. For squid, they have a complex nerve system and developed brain. They eat deep sea fish and other squid, and are predated upon by sperm whales. They are found in all of the world's oceans.

Re: First animal you see in the morning!
Like most mornings, I saw a black-capped chickadee, or more accurately a dozen of them, waiting for me to put out the bird feeders.

The chickadee usually has a black cap on its head. Many birds have caps, and this has great significance. Anything associated with the head has applications to the thinking process, higher mind, and higher perceptions. Black is associated with mystery, the feminine, and the great womb of life. As to the color of the cap, it reflects that the chickadee can help you with the uncovering of mysteries of the mind. It can awaken understanding and higher truth. It can help you to perceive more clearly in the dark.

To the Cherokee Indians, the chickadee is the bird of truth. It helps us to pinpoint truth and knowledge. One tale speaks of a witch by the name of Spearfinger who terrorized the entire tribe. She would wait in hiding to kill any passer-by. After killing them, she would stab the liver of teh individual with her speafinger and eat it. Nothing seemed to be able to stop the witch as she was made mostly of stone. Then a chickadee landed on her, showing the tribe warriors exactly where she was vulnerable to attack.

Chickadees usually trael in groups, reflecting a cheerful sociableness about them. For such a small bird, it is also fearless, with no qualms of taking on larger birds that may threaten it.

There are seven kinds of chickadees and this is most significant to those with this totem. Seven has an ancient mysticism associated with it throughout the world. It is a sacred number. It is a symbol of the individual rising from the material plane of life, as depicted in the ancient image of the triangle (3) upon the square (4). It has association with the seven rays of power, the seven major planets, the seven bodies of the human being, and the seven chakra centers.

It is this last correspondence that is reflected most strongly with the chickadee. When the seven chakras or energy centers of humans are balanced, there is a greater realization of truth in the world around us. It also enables us to express the truth more joyfully within our life. Some people say, "The truth hurts." Those who have a chickadee as a totem will learn to express the truth in a manner that heals, balances, and opens the perceptions. Truth is shared in a manner that adds cheer an djoy to your own life and the lives of others.
