DIY Solar Panels - Make your own Power!

You'll need:

Solar Cells (The 0.5 volt / 3.6 Amp type) - (Source these on Ebay)

Soldering Iron

2 x Perspex sheets at least 3mm thick (Plasticpeople website)

EVA material (as above)

Araldite or silicon sealant (Hardware store)

Hair Dryer (Your wife / gf or mum's bedroom)
or

Heat Gun (Hardware store)

Material for spacer 'beading' (Use your initiative)

This part will be covering the soldering, wire connections and EVA applying to the solar panels.

The cells are wired up in a series configuration resulting in a theoretical 8 volts from 16 cells. However in extreme sunshine this can result in a 10 volt reading.

For determining how many cells you need, that is depending on how many volts you want to put out.
One massive panel kicking out 25 volts + in sunlight will be enough to charge up a bank of car-battery's or deep-cell batterys.
This could be too unwieldy though, especially for mounting on an RV or camper.

Two smaller panels configured in parallel will boost up the amperage

Cost for all materials was approx 50 Euro's or thereabouts.

This is the final part the Solar Panel DIY job.

This part will be covering the 'beading' spacer material, perspex fixing, environmentally sealing, confirmation voltages and the grand unveiling :)

Any questions on this let me know and I'll try answering them during this busy time!

Don't go crazy with homemade.
If they are not UL rated, insurance wont cover you on home installations.

They also would not last a week in the UK climate.

Cells in this country need to be 110% water and frost tight and these just wont last.

so what are you going to run or charge up with 9V ?

Should be 17 Volt minimum from cells to charge a 12V lead acid or gell battery.

Re: DIY Solar Panels - Make your own Power!
I agree that DIY panels are nice.

But, a complete solar set up is like six gallons of gasoline and a stick of dynomite in your house.

I am pretty sure Insurance wont cover your house if burns down with homemade solar setup.

Re: DIY Solar Panels - Make your own Power!
Thank you for this Great Post But the really expensive parts are the Batteries because you need a good amount to store power and run off them for a while during an outage, And then the Inverter to covert your battery power to Home ac Current and you want to get a Pure Sine-wave not a Modified Sin-wave inverter, Modified may produce a low hum like a cheap power supply for Radio equipment. So a Grand or two for decent Batteries and Grand or two High amp Pure Sine-wave inverter. Thank you for your post.
