Anonymous Coward User ID: 30018099 United States 12/17/2012 10:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | To those calling for the banning of violent games First of all, let me just say that anyone who thinks video games caused this, congratulations. You have officially sunk to a level of brain-dead stupidity the depths of which I cannot possibly fathom.
Now that I've got that out of the way, let me explain some cold hard truth to you. All you folks demanding something be done about violence in video games, I hope you understand just what the implications of this are.
I'm sure most of you calling for this are of the Christian/Conservative persuasion. This would mean that many of you would demand your religious freedom along with other Constitutional freedoms, such as the right to free speech and the right to bear arms. You also claim you want limited government. After all, we need less government regulation, don't we? They don't need to be involved in our personal lives. Isn't that what you all advocated during this last election cycle?
Now, you've already got a rating system on games. A VERY CLEAR system, which shows you exactly what kind of content is in the game. Can you not read? Apparently not, since I saw at least one of your ilk on Fox News demanding something be done to rate these games. Apparently, you folks doesn't feel compelled to actually know anything about the topic before you go ranting about it.
So what more can be done besides ratings? The only other thing you can do is begin restricting the content of the games themselves. And if you demand this, then you make yourselves hypocrites. Not only are you bringing in more government regulation and limiting more personal freedom (which you're supposedly against), but you're giving the government an inroad to other aspects of your life.
"Hi there, I'm Big Daddy Government. Recently, we just scored a major victory on behalf of you, the American People, in regards to the plague of violent video games which has been corrupting our youth and destroying lives for far too long. But we cannot think we've won the fight against evil simply from this one act. That would be absurd. We must now turn out attention to other threats which are just as dire to you and your family.
Not long ago, there was another tragic shooting. A football player, suffering from concussions and mental problems stemming from years of physical punishment to his body, murdered his girlfriend, and then himself. And he was not the first to engage in violent behavior due to these types of injuries. And how can we be surprised at this? Football is a very violent sport, which encourages and requires great acts of physical violence to win. What do we expect our children to learn from this? And yet we allow them to not only watch this activity on television, it is actually encouraged in our schools and universities across this great nation. How can we have left this unaddressed for so long?
Furthermore, we must recognize that while video games provided an avenue for violent ideas, it is not the only route these thoughts can take to the mind. Recently, my attention was called to a collection of stories, brought together in a book which many of you know as the Bible. In one of these stories, a man named David engages in combat with a giant. He proceeds to bash the giants head with a rock, and then cuts his head off. This is a much celebrated act, and David is greatly rewarded for this deed. While reading this story, I was struck by how similar this scenario is to many of the violent games we've just brought an end to. A hero, fighting a great monster, overcoming it with tremendous violence...surely these similarities cannot be lost on all of us?
Therefore, I am implementing new legislation to address these great evils, and protect the minds of our youth. Thank you for your cooperation, from Big Daddy Government."
If you folks want to throw gamers down that slippery slope, you'd better be prepared to slide down it with us. |
