WEST BROWNSVILLE, Pa. —

State police have found a suicidal man with a stolen rifle who was reportedly roaming in the woods near state-owned California University of Pennsylvania.


Washington County 911 dispatchers said police were negotiating with the man early Monday afternoon in hopes he'll surrender.

Dispatchers said they've been told the gunman has a drug problem and is intent on harming himself, but hasn't threatened anyone else

Sky 4 flew over a wooded area near West Brownsville, where a man -- believed to be the armed suspect -- was sitting in an open field.

Several officers had their guns drawn, but remained a good distance away.

All schools in the California Area School District have been placed on lockdown.

Authorities are negotiating with an armed man in a wooded area behind a Wal-Mart in West Brownsville, Washington County, according to an update this afternoon by Pennsylvania State Police.

Police identified the man as John Kerik, 28, of West Brownsville.

"He was released this morning from a mental health commitment. He does have a weapon," said Trooper Stefani Plume, a state police spokeswoman who is at the scene. "He's here in a field next to the Wal-Mart."
