Re: The Sun Was Supposed To Set At 4:41 Central Time In Missouri, 12/18 , Still Hasn't Set At 5:01
Normally I just read post here. I came across this thread yesterday and found it very interesting because I had noticed the same thing happening. At a time when the daylight should be less until the winter solstice, I noticed last week it seemed the daylight was getting longer, if only by a couple of minutes but it was. So I paid attention last night. The sun set about 15 minutes later than what it should have AND the civil twilight lasted until 6:15 pm. Here is when it should have ended.

Uh, simple...do you even know the meaning of civil twilight you dweeb? if not then let me s'plain:
Civil twilight is defined to begin in the morning, and to end in the evening when the center of the Sun is geometrically 6 degrees below the horizon. This is the limit at which twilight illumination is sufficient, under good weather conditions, for terrestrial objects to be clearly distinguished; at the beginning of morning civil twilight, or end of evening civil twilight, the horizon is clearly defined and the brightest stars are visible under good atmospheric conditions in the absence of moonlight or other illumination. In the morning before the beginning of civil twilight and in the evening after the end of civil twilight, artificial illumination is normally required to carry on ordinary outdoor activities. And before you even say it, no, it was not the moon "illuminating" the sky. The sky was still light from the sun setting.

How did you measure the sun's altitude below the horizon? I don't care of you could or couldn't distinguish objects, the defined end of civil twilight is a function of the sun's geometric altitude below the horizon regardless of how much ambient light is present. The latter is a function of atmospheric refraction and conditions.

Notice how actual empirical evidence gets ignored.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

Greetings Dr. Astro, thank you for your data and input on the matter. I appreciate your mind for its scientific observations and points of view, however my experience finds this perspective disrespective to what is mans greatest scientific tool for discovery: his observations of perceptions of 10+ senses.

You have precise astronomic tools that can take fine measurements of the physical world around us...and these measurements represent the physical world around us represented as a number, a figure, a value of scientific meaning and measure - based on our understandings of truth of our knowledge on astronomy, physics, mathematics, etc...but what does it really mean? - Well, really only whatever meaning we've given to it based on the truths of the world that we have come to believe.

I do believe my knowledge of understanding is incomplete.

I am a scientist.

I make observations.

My tools are my senses, and I find their information meaningful respective to the truths that my understanding and knowledge are based upon.

Our senses allow us to discover. Without senses we would either have the knowledge of everything, or nothing @ all.

I have faith, trust, and belief to know what my body senses and what it tells me, and this I believe is a scientific tool with figures that have a lot more meaning....but only if what I believe is true.

Thank you again for you astronomical scientific input!
 Quoting: Lies & Alibis

Then again we have to be suspicious of everyone, especially those who claim superior training because they can, by defaulted trust in the system, sway many opinions.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30218778

Then prove me wrong with actual empirical measurements. Thus far what you have demonstrated is a lack of understanding of astronomical phenomenon like civil twilight. Yes, I'm an amateur, that means I do it because I love doing it, not as my profession to make money. It does not imply a lack of skill, in fact serious amateur astronomers are highly skilled and make discoveries all the time.

Damn. A guy observes the sun rising farther in the north, during winter no less! That's very odd because the planet isn't even tilted.

A truly unusual phenomenon!

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29759427

Shill or Troll? (or uneducated)

SO I ask you: how many degrees the Sun can rise from the East ---> to the North in winter season?

Tell us the max in degrees.

 Quoting: DUCM900

siren2 shill siren2

North = 0 Degree SO? How many degrees ?

no answer yet?

-
 Quoting: DUCM900

Then virtually 0 degrees, because depending on your latitude and the time of year, the sun can only brush the northern horizon.

Those who watch it please tell me what you think. I'd like to discuss it. I know some of you might say oh the History Channel they are full of it but seriously just watch this one.

Except that it was out in the county headed away from the city..
and it was still very daytime.. and I live in a rural area.
And I know the difference between what I saw and city-glow.
City-glow is not pink.. nor does it encompass 360 degrees of view.

I'm a hunter.
I've watched the sun come up and go down for over 50 years..
Prime hunting is just after can't see in the morning and just before can't see in the afternoon..
game animals move the most during those times.
I get into the woods before daylight to morning hunt...and out after dark on an afternoon hunt.

So.. I'm very aware of what that looks like... in all kinds of weather.
Hunting effectively means remaining motionless and scanning with your eyeballs.. for hours at a time.

I think I'll trust my eyes and experience on this, over a random claim from who knows who..

I've always been laughing and shaking my head over the years at all of these people on GLP who claim the sun has been rising and setting at the wrong times. I figured they were morons/morans who just finally started paying attention to what is going on around them.

After today, well now I'm not so sure.

I've been working from home in the upstate NY area for the past 15 years, and I am definitely an early bird. I've very well aware at what time the sun rises in the winter, because at that time of year I have to draw the curtains because for the first hour or so the sun is directly in my eyes.

Tomorrow is the winter solstice, meaning the sun should rise the latest it will during the entire year. During the winter the sun does not begin peaking above the horizon from my office window until around 7:40. Imagine my surprise today that before 7:30 the sun was already completely above the horizon!

I'll have to check tomorrow to see if that is consistent or a one-day anomaly. Our area being known for cloudiness does not help for day-to-day observations. I just know that what I saw today does not match the norm for the past 14 winters at my house.

Congratulations for seeing a perfect example of field rotation.

I guarantee that if you'd looked at it a few hours before you would have seen it appear upright and a few hours before that it would have appeared lit on the top side.
