the funny thing is, at the time, people thought we were at our nadir

funny that....

but yes, in hindsite it was a very sweet time, right into the early mid 1980s, but the early mid 1970s especially were sweet and pretty innocent

I'd say morally the 50's and 60's were the golden era. The 70's were the spark of our eternal downfall. US is definitely mystery Babylon as described in the bible.

For the USA, the late 1970's was a time of inflation, huge interest rates, and fear.

As a teenager, I had a fatalistic attitude due primarily to the impending nuclear exchange with the USSR.

Things always look better the further away they are. ;-`)

The young people have no idea what the 60's, 70's, and 80's were like unfortunately and they probably could care less because they don't know what they missed. We had no Rap music, imagine that.

Yes, that is also what kept me fearful way back when. That and the "Zodiac Killer" was creeping around my neck of the woods.

yes, there was that awareness of possible confrontation with the USSR, but by the mid 1970s, it had died down from the frenzy of the 1950s/early 60's "Bay of Pigs" era

People thought the recession was bad then, but looking back on it, most people could still get by with one salary, house prices were in proportion to salaries and you could fly all over the country without once being treated as a criminal suspect at risk for being detained indefinitely or killed for simply resisting the TSA's tender mercies:

In addition, the 70s definitely had better music, lol

Re: USA golden era the 70s?
I take trips down memory lane reading the bound editions of our local paper at the library. Not the microfiche ones, the real deal. They go back to the 1920s.

The late 70s (I was in grade school) seem to stretch on forever. After that, it is like time sped up. 2013 already...

Reading the paper, which stresses local events, things weren't so dandy. Robberies and fatal car accidents were more common then. It was a more innocent time here as we were still a small city and not a sprawling 100,000+ burb as we are today.

As for the USA, I feel there was more of a sense of community then, and not our current situation with every special interest group competing for a piece of the pie.

Agreed.

People are forgetting the Vietnam War, Iran Hostage Crises, and the '73 Oil Crisis.

Not to mention Carter was President. I never thought the American people would elect a worse President than that. However, we certainly have. We have forgotten our history and we are repeating it.

edit: I'm not from Canada (GLP glitch) so don't go there.

Even with the Vietnam war, the '60's were the best. Most drugs were legal, we had a good attitude about the future, sex was available(to some), and we were moving forward into a better world.

Too bad I didn't know then what I know now, so I could have fully taken advantage of that time of freedom.

yet there was no question that US cars would be made in the US...everyone watched the same TV shows, the same 3 networks, pretty much listened to the same radio and music

there was no thought of jobs moving to communist China in our worst dreams

yes, it seemed bad when gas lept to $1.00 a gallon, but what I wouldn't give to go back to 1972

but I'll gladly take 1982 too..

Re: USA golden era the 70s?
70s were good. We tried to talk to all, male + female, black + white, young + old. Could still buy a house, car, lots of jobs, peace and love, soft music or rock music, cities had a lower population as stated above.
Had a lot of real friends, all kinds.

The acceleration toward the future stopped on November 22, 1963. The rest was just trajectory.

Prayer in school being unconstitutional
Immigration Act of 1965
Vietnam War
Great Society
Affirmative action
Roe V Wade
GATT
NAFTA
WTO
GMOs
Waco
OKC
911
Patriot Act
NDAA

and more were necessary to knock down, bludgeon and kill America.

Look at that list, what a horrible change in America.

The decay of culture and society began in earnest in the 1990's.....right about the time the internet and computer games began to take hold.

Coincidence?

Can't really say with regard to the US, but the 50s and 60s were golden in Australia. Even the 70s weren't bad, compared with today
