This is far from the first subpoena Facebook has cooperated with, just the first we’ve been able to look at. Here’s what the site says about its policies for cooperating with law enforcement:

We work with law enforcement where appropriate and to the extent required by law to ensure the safety of the people who use Facebook. We may disclose information pursuant to subpoenas, court orders, or other requests (including criminal and civil matters) if we have a good faith belief that the response is required by law. This may include respecting requests from jurisdictions outside of the United States where we have a good faith belief that the response is required by law under the local laws in that jurisdiction, apply to users from that jurisdiction, and are consistent with generally accepted international standards.

This shouldn't come as a big surprise to anyone really.

But if you are surprised, use this as a vehicle to further understand the (potential) consequences of what you post on the web.

That is why you should avaid using 'free' email gmail, yahoo.com, etc. you are giving them the right to scan your emails and use them. Pony up and pay for one that doesn't reagan.com is the first to come to mind but there are others.



Do not use google or other search engines as they track your IP address. One called startpage.com does not track you.

Use Https rather than Http when visiting websites.

Simple stuff that takes a bit more effort.

Or you could live like the amish, they don't have much info on them in comparison to people trapped in the matrix by Birth Certs, Social Insecurity Numbers, Zip Codes etc.

If you're web developer you would understand that your private information can be stored without your knowledge in a database. Any information that you submit to the web page is potentially information that will be stored into a database. The fact that they use this against you in a court of law is perfectly legal, however your private information is being stored on a server. This is also completely legal. You checked a check box accepting their terms and agreement.

The thing people are pissed about is the fact that they didn't know it would incriminate them. Ignorance is not a defense in the court of law though.

If you do not like it... stop using facebook? What is the point of facebook anyways... to glorify your life to the rest of your friends? Stop talking about it and walk it. Facebook is such a fucking joke.

When I went to work for Microsoft(I'm sure the vast majority of large companies would agree) I was told, "Never send an email, write anything on a message board or save a file that you are not prepared to read in a Court of Law.". They were, of course, referring to doing so from a Company owned piece of equipment but sound advice nonetheless.

Quick... tell the government to control the internet... while they are at it they can start taxing it as well

Your best bet? Use different accounts for different communications and DON'T POST PERSONAL STUFF ONLINE, MUCH LESS SIGNUP USING YOUR REAL NAME AND BIRTHDATE. Paying for stuff with a credit card, or paying anything online at all, makes it that much easier to track you,

You can't conceal much, just make it harder and time consuming to piece the puzzle together.

This is a good reminder, but in all honesty? It doesn't really mean anything. Should circumstances change to where authorities want you for one reason..legitimate or not..or another--they're going to find an excuse. A speeding ticket could get you nabbed. They don't need a real reason if they want you bad enough.

Paranoia only serves to imprison yourself. Facebook in malignant..is there anyone alive that still doesn't know that? Even so..it doesn't really matter.

If they want you? They won't need your internet history to get you.
